18 Darbuka drums and 36 robotic arms are controlled via wireless communication. Drum music is composed and played at a music sequencer on an iPad. liatsegal.blogspot.com The project was presented at the Bat-Yam international biennale of landscape urbanism, September 2010, as a part of the 'Green to Blue' ecological street project. During the biennale, electricity generated by wind turbines and photovoltaic cells was used to operate the robotic Darbuka drums. The drums were mounted on the wind turbines columns, creating a hybrid, digital-mechanic drumming circle, a futuristic-traditional acoustic space. Darbuka drums and robotics Assaf Talmudi, Liat Segal and Jonathan Rubin. Green to Blue, Street Production: Matanya Sack and Uri Reicher.

merry christmas and happy holidays created by bd594, toronto, canada This project was really difficult, it was 70% timing and 30% execution. There are alot of YouTube videos with floppies and stepper motors playing songs. These motors have a quick response time because they are not under a heavy load. The problem with a flatbed scanner is moving the large carriage head. It was not designed to move quickly and when it is playing music you will notice the head changes directions. This is to prevent the carriage from smashing into the chassis. As the notes are playing the carriage head has to periodically change direction and this can add many seconds to a 3 or 4 minute song. This takes extra programming to compensate for these delays. As for the drums they are just a couple of solenoids connected to a pulley system in order to ampilfy the movement. The solenoids are used and have very slow response time, you may notice a few beats are missed during the drum rolls. Believe me when I say I have a new respect for drummers. enjoy

This is my african dunun robot. This electronic friend plays the melody on the 3 dununs while i can concentrate on playing the djembe patterns. After making a midi file, the midi-player or laptop sends the midi information to a decoder to finally drive the electric drumsticks. Getting the idea was more easy than building it. Specially finding the drumstick-actuators, making no noise, consuming not too much power and responding quickly enough was timeconsuming.
