Laus Deo Semper www.CobusPotgieter.com http This is a drum cover (or remix) of Vanilla Sky's cover of Rihanna's song, Umbrella. (whoa, now that's one complicated sentence) Crazy amounts of fun, this one. Loved the groovy parts in the intro and outtro, aswell as the heavy stuff in the middle. Obviously the last few choruses were also quite nice to do :) (As for the outtro doublebass crossovers; it's the only part of the song that was written beforehand, the rest is all improvised on the spot, to keep things fresh and unpredictable.) I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song i play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what i play is improvised. Even though i have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself. HAPI Drum from HapiTones.com Special edition custom painted and tuned to the Akebono scale in the key of E. The Akebono scale is a traditional five-note Japanese musical scale. In a Western context, it can be thought of as a pentatonic version of the Aeolian mode, and can also be used in many different styles of music. It is also one of the favorite scales of Hang Drum players. No effects or other instruments, just a pure Hapi demo with a touch of reverb. In this demo, aside from playing the normal tones, I'm playing around tapping it soft for nice pure tones and also hard, for more edgy metallic sounds and percussive effects. The unique tone of the HAPI (hand activated percussion instrument) is created by a tuned vibrating steel tongue. The concept is similar to a wooden tongue drum. When a tongue is quickly and lightly struck with the finger or mallet it vibrates creating sound waves. We have added dampening of the notes and drum body to keep the drum from becoming discordant and "ringy". This technique is built into each drum and provides excellent resonance while supplying the correct amount of dampening. By placing low notes next to the appropriate higher notes we achieve multiple harmonics. Their vibrations create desirable overtones which compliment the timbre of the tone. Ultimate View of Fire and Flames on Drums
Since getting my new camera angle and capture setup working on my latest videos, this has been the #1 request by far: to redo TTFAF. I kinda wanted to do it anyway, because looking back at my old TTFAF vids, they're such poor video quality. I never get to see what my hands are doing either, so I wanted to see this video too! ;-) I think the reason people wanted to see this is to see more closely how I play it with drum sticks. So for some of the trickier sticking parts, I've slowed it down for a few bars and used a Kameo-esque "warrior focus" mode for added effect. I kinda like it. I only did it in parts that are repetitive so that you could also see it played at normal speed in other parts of the song. This will be my last TTFAF video. I love the song, but it's just too big a mountain to climb. It takes me a 1/2 hour of warm up just to be able to pass it. I practiced it for a couple hours earlier in the day just to try and get back to how good I was at it when I 5-star'd it ( youtube.com ) and even so I couldn't quite reach 5 stars (missed it by a measly 5000 points! If I'd 'a just hit some of those easy SP phrases in the solos, or just not botched the intro... ugh, I'm full of regret... ah well, I have to move on.) This was my 3rd take of the night and by the 4th one I could barely get through the intro. It's just so tiring! Sweat dripping off my face while I'm playing this. Seriously.
