Drought induced gene expression analysis in Arabidopsis by micro array technology
This video gives information about chip based analysis of the genome by high throughput technology. A DNA micro array is a multiplex technology which is evolved from Southern blotting. it is based on the principle of HYBRIDIZATION of cDNA /RNA to the complementary oligo nucleotides of the genome. Micro array chip is consist of consist of an arrayed series of thousands of microscopic spots of DNA oligo nucleotides each containing picomoles (10−12 moles) of a specific DNA sequence, known as probes (or reporters). These can be a short section of a gene or other DNA element that are used to hybridize a cDNA sample under high-stringency conditions. There are various types of microarrays are used such as 1) DNA microarray 2) Protein microarray 3) Tissue Micro array The animation shown in the video is explaining the procedure and mechanism behind the micro array technology. Drought hammers Spain, Portugal
www.euronews.com Large parts of Spain and Portugal are desperate for rain, nearing the end of the driest Iberian winter in more than 70 years. Spain got less than 30 percent of its normal precipitation this winter. With both countries in the middle of an economic crisis, many people feel it could not come at a worse time. Thousands of jobs and many millions of euros of agricultural output are threatened by this. Farmers who can are irrigating where rain usually does the job. Farmer José Manuel Allue said: "If it doesn't rain in two to three days, and the weather forecast says it won't, there is no solution for the crops. As there's very little water, we'll see what happens with fruit and vegetables. This latest catastrophe means a lot more people are going to be out of work in the farming sector. We have no idea how we are going to be by the end of the year." In the Mediano reservoir in Huesca, in the northwest of Spain, stored water used to submerge an abandoned church. At the moment, the front steps are dry. One year ago, on average, the country's reservoirs were 80 percent full. Weather expert Ángel Ribera said: "Spain goes through a cycle of drought. What is surprising about this time is how extreme it's been over the last three months. There hasn't been a drop of rain in many parts of Spain. There is usually a bit of precipitation at other times." Portugal is much the same. The government has just approved 90 million euros to help farmers with livestock, a hard move ...

Argentina creates drought-resistant gene for crops
Argentina's farmers cannot roll back climate change --- but with a new biotech advance which allows crops to survive in hot, dry climes, they may not need to. One team has found that transferring a sunflower gene into cereal crops like corn and soy can help them to survive longer without water, and even make them more productive. The discovery is being touted as Argentina's next genetically modified "miracle" -- for better and for worse. Duration: 02:08

EXTREME WEATHER: Record Drought Grips UK - 20 Million Affected; Draconian Water Restrictions!
Twenty million people in the South and East of England awoke to the first day of a hosepipe ban this morning, as emergency drought measures imposed by seven water companies came into effect. From midnight, people in the South and East risk fines of up to £1000 for using a hose for all but a few exempted activities. Two consecutive dry winters have taken their toll on the South's reservoirs and groundwater levels, leading to severe drought conditions that are expected to last all of spring and summer. It may be many months before gardeners can turn the sprinklers back on. Although rain is now falling across much of the South-east -- and other parts of the country have even seen heavy snow -- the Environment Agency has warned that it is now unlikely that groundwater levels can be replenished in time to avoid a long-lasting drought that will impact on both people and the environment. For two years in some parts of the country, reservoirs and the underground water sources that supply the country's water have not been replenishing fast enough to keep up with demand. In Bewl in Kent and Ardingly in West Sussex reservoirs have had to be refilled from already-depleted rivers. Water levels are below normal at most of the UK's reservoirs and some are reported to be at half-capacity. Thames Water, Anglian Water, South East Water, Veolia Water Central and South East -- which service London and much of the South-east -- and Sutton and East Surrey Water, are all imposing "temporary-use ...

Slow Africa drought response 'cost lives'
The deaths of up to 100000 people in the drought-affected Horn of Africa could have been minimised had there been a swifter reaction from the international community and aid agencies, according to a report. The study by Oxfam and Save the Children says early warning systems forecast an emergency situation as early as August 2010, but a full-scale response to the drought did not start until July last year. It said donors wanted "proof of a human catastrophe before acting to prevent one". By that time, malnutrition levels had deteriorated and parts of Somalia had already been declared famine zones. Al Jazeera's Barbara Angopa reports.
