In a voice plainly reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, Donnie challenges notions of inequality, and while his words are sobering, he never loses sight of the groove. The horn-infused, swaggering "Big Black Buck" is pure New Orleans funeral march, while "Beautiful Me"--a razor-sharp pronouncement of individuality--builds on an almost gospel foundation, albeit one with a percussive spine. "Our New National Anthem" has a finger-snapping Philly-soul vibe, and while a reference to the impact of 9/11 seems, at this point, a bit like declaring the sky blue, it's a rare misstep in an otherwise fluid and funky debut. --Kim Hughes

This drama about an undercover cop who learns the hidden dangers of working his way inside the mob was based on a true story. Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp) is an FBI agent who is given an assignment to infiltrate the Mafia; calling himself Donnie Brasco, he befriends Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino), a low-level mob hit man whose personal life is in tatters. Lefty's marriage is falling apart, his son is a junkie, and his health is failing, which only adds to his growing disillusionment about having spent 30 years with the Mafia (and killing 26 people) with little to show for it. But in Donnie, Lefty sees someone who can succeed where he failed; he takes the young man under his wing, and under Lefty's tutelage Donnie quickly rises through the ranks of organized crime; however, the longer he plays the role of the gangster, the more Joe Pistone finds himself becoming Donnie Brasco in his increasingly rare off hours; it drives a wedge between himself and his wife (Anne Heche) and children, and Joe realizes that a break in character among the hoodlums he's come to know could mean a death sentence for himself and his family. Just as importantly, Joe has come to regard Lefty as a close and trusted friend, and Joe realizes that when the day comes where he has to turn in his Mob associates, he'll be ending Lefty's life as surely as if he put a slug in his head himself. His world was characterized by violence, alcoholism, and abuse, but young Donnie McClurkin found a safe haven in his church, Bethel Gospel Tabernacle, Assemblies of God. It was there, at the age of nine, when he made a commitment to Christ. Throughout his troubled youth, amidst the strife of daily life, he learned to stand on the promises in the scripture. "A man's gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men." (Prov 18:16) "I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it" (Rev. 3:8). Donnie was born, and raised in Amityville, New York. Because of a God-given gift of music that ran in his family, Donnie formed the McClurkin Singers with his siblings, and a few close friends in 1979. It wasn't long after that when Donnie began to feel a calling to preach. He went on to meet gospel-legend Andrae Crouch, who became a mentor to him. Through that relationship, grew a friendship that would shape the entire course of Donnie's future.
