No Mas Presents: Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No by James Blagden
In celebration of the greatest athletic achievement by a man on a psychedelic journey, No Mas and artist James Blagden proudly present the animated tale of Dock Ellis' legendary LSD no-hitter. In the past few years we've heard all too much about performance enhancing drugs from greenies to tetrahydrogestrinone, and not enough about performance inhibiting drugs. If our evaluation of the records of athletes like Mark McGwire, Roger Clemens, Marion Jones, and Barry Bonds needs to be revised downwards with an asterisk, we submit that that Dock Ellis record deserves a giant exclamation point. Of the 263 no-hitters ever thrown in the Big Leagues, we can only guess how many were aided by steroids, but we can say without question that only one was ever thrown on acid. Sadly, the great Dock Ellis died last December at 63. A year before, radio producers Donnell Alexander and Neille Ilel, had recorded an interview with Ellis in which the former Pirate right hander gave a moment by moment account of June 12, 1970, the day he no-hit the San Diego Padres. Alexander and Ilels original four minute piece appeared March 29, 2008 on NPRs Weekend America. When we stumbled across that piece this past June, Blagden and Isenberg were inspired to create a short animated film around the original audio. www.nomas-nyc.com buy Rufus Thomas (Do The) Push and Pull - Part I and II here: bit.ly

Dock Ellis "I Pitched a No-Hitter on LSD" Shoot Video
Dock was the guest speaker at the June 30th 2007 Pirate Fan Protest. Trapped In Quicksand was in attendance and was lucky enough to be graced with some one on one time with the Dock. Amateur in every way despite drunkeness, we came home with some great footage of my favorite counter culture icon. Today, Dock Ellis is retired but volunteers as drug counselor in Victorville, California.

This aint your mom's jazz, or your dad's funk; Doc Ellis kick it new, now and LIVE. With just bass, drums, keys and guitar, this badass foursome weaves in and out of grooves and themes like they were born to do it, with an eye towards thoughtful improv and, especially, mating genres and dragging their children up on stage. Its not uncommon, in fact, for dudes at a Doc E. show to remark that "These cats sound like John Scofield and King Tubby jamming at the Flaming Lips' house!" Doc Ellis have rocked at UMass Amherst, in Amherst, MA, and at famed NYC venues like Kenny's Castaways, Coda, Knitting Factory and the Lion's Den, where they performed as part of the 2006 CMJ Music Marathon. They have shared the stage with notable acts like Papa Mali, Jounce, NBFB, Topaz, Moonshine Still, Licorice and The Breakfast.

The Doc Ellis Classic Brooklyn vs. Pittsburgh
May 1st 2011 After months of talking about it, friends in Pittsburgh and Brooklyn organized and played a baseball game against each other. The game took place after Pittsburgh's annual May Day parade. The game stayed even for 6 innings before Pittsburgh broke away with 8 runs in the bottom of the 6th, a deficit Brooklyn could not overcome. Pittsburgh went on to win the game 22 to 15. Unfortunately, with only 1 hour of footage of this glorious 10+ hour day, many all stars that played are not seen here on film but they are certainly not forgotten! That goes for all the great bands that played the after party too! Enjoy- Jen

Opening Day 1972 Highlights - Pirates v Mets (Ellis v Seaver)
Happy Opening Day, Dock Ellis fans! 40 years ago, Dock pitched opening day at Shea against the Mets' Tom Seaver (who Dock called "Nancy," long story..). One of three times he pitched opening day for the Pirates. This time the 1972 baseball strike had delayed the start of the season by 2 weeks, and both teams had new managers - Yogi Berra would take the field as the Mets manager after the sudden death of Gil Hodges, and Bill Virdon was the Pirates new skipper. Enjoy!
