The Divide
Nine strangers survive the unthinkable when the basement of their high-rise apartment building protects them from a nuclear attack on New York City. With unspeakable horrors waiting on the outside and no hope for rescue, the group descends into madness as the days pass. As supplies dwindle and tensions flare, they grow increasingly unhinged by hopelessness and close quarters. They turn on one another, and each act of physical and psycho-sexual torment becomes more depraved than the last. Only one survivor holds on to a thin chance for escape, even with no hope of salvation on the other side of the bunker door.

WHY WE FIGHT SERIES: FILM #3 "Divide and Conquer," Chapter III of Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" series, begins with Britain and France's declaration of war on Germany after Hitler's invasion of Poland. The film covers the Nazi capture of Denmark and Norway, steps necessary to mount a future attack on Britain, then describes in detail Hitler's strategy as he conquers Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. Special attention is paid to Nazi atrocities. Dead and injured children are shown en masse and the film explains how the bombing of Rotterdam leads to "thirty thousand men, women and children killed in ninety minutes." The narrator tells how the Luftwaffe bombs small villages so that refugees clog the highways, and how it uses precision machine gun fire to herd the survivors toward the allied armies, who find their progress severely constrained as a result. An American military officer details the Nazi plan for an invasion of France, which Hitler conquers in just over a month. The Germans bludgeon the French armies into surrender, then "enslave" much of the local population to service the German military regime.

Ernie Souchak (John Belushi) is a celebrated Chicago Sun-Times columnist famous for his blistering political exposes. While his controversial reporting has earned him the respect of his editor, Howard McDermott (Allen Goorwitz) and the admiration of a legion of fans, it also earns him a trip to the hospital following a run-in with some disgruntled thugs. Suggesting he leave the city for a while, McDermott sends Ernie to the Rockies to interview renowned ornithologist Nell Porter (Blair Brown) who studies the habits of the endangered American bald eagle. It's a case of loathe at first sight when the chain smoking, big city Souchak meets the reclusive nature-lover Porter!
