The disease has left 9 year old Sammy Musili severely disfigured and forced him to quit school following close to a year of stigmatization.
African Zombie Disease Epidemic: Vaccine- Related?
In the last few years, there have been more and more reports of the 'zombie disease' afflicting children in Uganda, Sudan, and Tanzania. It started around 1988, with most cases occurring around 2003. Some say it is an older disease of which the symptoms were reported in Tanzania as far back as 1962, but it is possible that these are two different illnesses with similar symptoms. What is causing this incurable 'Zombie disease' aka 'nodding disease' is a mystery, but some suspect it may be related to vaccine trials conducted in the regions where it has appeared. The best way to prevent infection is good sanitation; always wash hands after touching slugs and snails or surfaces contaminated by them. It is also important to thoroughly wash and cook any produce that could be contaminated. Never eat raw snails or slugs. If infected, there may be no symptoms or only mild short lived symptoms. Most cases do not require medical attention. Sometimes the infection causes meningitis with headache, stiff neck, tingling or pain in the skin, fever, nausea, and vomiting. East African children dying from mysterious disease
A mysterious disease is killing thousands of children in Uganda, Sudan and Tanzania. The cause of the "nodding disease" is as yet unknown but it only affects children between the ages of five and 15. Thought to be an epileptic neurological effect of the Onchocerca volvulus parasitic worm that causes Onchocerciasis or river blindness, victims suffer seizures that often start with nodding of the head, giving it its name. Malcolm Webb reports from northern Uganda.

Children and Adolescents with Congenital Heart Disease: Neurodevelopmental Outcomes and Predictors
The survival rate of children with congenital heart disease, the most common structural birth defect, has increased dramatically in recent decades. Concerns have been raised, however, about the later neurodevelopment of these children. Although intelligence is generally not impaired, they are at increased risk of impairments in speech (oromotor coordination) and language (pragmatics), visual-spatial skills, executive functions (planning, organization), social cognition (affect recognition), attention, motor skills, and psychosocial adjustment. Experimental studies evaluating the neurodevelopmental outcomes associated with different intra-operative management strategies have generally been disappointing, identifying few modifiable factors that improve patient outcomes. Instead, factors such as genotype (eg, 22q11 microdeletions) and general medical morbidity (eg, post-operative seizures) appear to be more important determinants of later neurodevelopment.
