It has been denied that Secretary of Defense Panetta's disarming of Marines in Afghanistan March 14 had anything to do with a rogue Army sniper's killing of sixteen Afghan civilians earlier in the week, but many are calling the move highly unusual, and one source states disarming Marines in a combat zone is contrary to military protocol. Approximately two hundred Marines were told to leave their weapons outside a tent while listening to Panetta's speech, but many state disarming the Marines will lead to a morale problem due to a high official distrusting his own troops. Sources state the Marines felt uncomfortable being without their weapons in what is essentially a war zone. What many considered a rush to judgement given the the rogue US sniper's history of PTSD and TBI (traumatic brain injury), Leon Panetta had stated almost immediately that the soldier could face the death penalty. Russian airborne troops are set to train how to target terrorists in America as part of a joint anti-terror drill with the United States which will take place in Fort Carson, Colorado at the end of next month. "Airborne troops from Russia and the United States would hold joint anti-terror drills in the US state of Colorado between May 24 and 31," reports the Xinhua news agency, citing Russian Defense Ministry Col. Alexander Kucherenko. The story was also reported by Russian news outlet RIA Novosti. The exercises, which will mark the first time the respective country's two airborne forces have held joint drills on US territory, will revolve around the the "reconnaissance of imaginary terrorists' camp and a raid," and will also involve evacuations of the troops by helicopter. The Russian soldiers will also be given access to US special service weapons at Fort Carson. However, the Russian troops won't just be confined to a US military base -- on May 27 they'll be out in the local community attending a baseball game in Colorado Springs. "This announcement comes at a time when Russia actually has troops working in cooperation with China," points out Business Insider's Eloise Lee, making reference to one of the largest ever Russian-Sino naval drills currently underway in the Yellow Sea. Eskrima (or Escrima), a fighting style indigenous to the Philippines, is believed to have evolved from Chinese, Malaysian and Indonesian martial arts forms brought to the islands by South China Sea traders around the 2nd century. It is a mostly weapons-based fighting style that combines punches, kicks, takedowns and joint lock techniques with stick and sword or knife fighting techniques. Eskrima was first introduced to the non-Filipino world in 1521, when Spanish explorers led by Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the South China Sea to stake their claim on the Philippine islands. Soon after the invasion, Magellan himself was killed on the small island of Mactan by native resisters armed with hardened sticks and led by the islands chief, Lapu-Lapu. Spain eventually gained control of the Philippines and outlawed all indigenous martial arts. Over the next several centuries, many fighters continued their practice in secret, by disguising Eskrima techniques in what they pretended were ceremonial dance-like rituals. The ban was lifted after 1898, when the United States won control of the Philippines from Spain, but an air of secrecy remained around Eskrima and its practitioners. During World War II, Filipino fighters used the stick-and-sword techniques to resist Japanese invaders, compensating for a lack of firearms with powerful, swift movements of their sticks and knives.
