Usually when people see a fireball they are quick to call it an explosion or a detonation. In actuality, what they've witnessed is a type of explosion called a "Deflagration". Many things are deflagrations. Logs burning in a fireplace are Deflagrating. The primer inside the shotgun is actually detonating. Lead Styphenate or Mercury Fulmanide are used in cartridge primers to start the pyrotechnic train in a bullet/shell. The primer itself is detonating, which kicks off the gunpowder which burns in the shell. Any powder detonations occur in the chamber. As the powder burns and begins to push the projectile out (gas seals with the barrel with something called an "obteration seal"). The powder in the barrel is also deflagrating.

(headphones required due to lower frequencies) Here's a brief first look at the Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s analogue synthesizer: analoguesolutions.org.uk This beast of a synth represents the latest in Analogue Solutions' Leipzig line and incorporates a vast number of new features, most notably the 8-step on-board sequencer which can be synced and controlled in a vast number of innovative ways (midi, LFO, VCO, etc.) This video serves as a first glimpse of the synth - yes, it's a teaser. The evolving sound uses the Leipzig's on-board step sequencer, however the pitch of the notes is controlled via MIDI. The sequencer can also be stepped manually via a MIDI keyboard. Sequencer reset is handled via accent (or using heavy velocity on a MIDI note). A beat was added to provide some context for the evolving bass line. UT Arlington Rotating Detonation Wave Engine Initial Testing Compilation
Several types of engines that utilize detonation waves have been conceptualized, of which the pulsed detonation engine (PDE) has seen the most extensive development. Another relatively unexplored concept (until recently) is the rotating detonation wave engine (RDWE). This engine uses an annulus placed perpendicular to an inlet and nozzle system whereby a detonation wave continuously travels around and detonates the incoming propellants to produce axial thrust. The engine, if successful, can be more efficient than a PDE because it eliminates the need to purge between detonations and has a more steady inlet and nozzle. Experimental research into this engine was made possible by a NSF LSAMP undergraduate research scholarship. The video shows initial testing of two engines, where some success is seen in the later clips. The tests are usually short since the data acquisition rate is high enough to produce a large amount of test data in a fraction of a second.

These clips are from a PDE that used a motorized rotary valve fuel injection and a modified automotive ignition system and hand built tungsten electrode spark plugs. The tube id is about 25 mm. The PDE is running on propane and oxygen mixtures. The runs were conducted at 10 Hz. The first video shows the wall material heating up as the engine runs, where some epoxy on the outside catches fire. Next, the force from the detonation waves cause a Shchelkin spiral mounted internally to be ejected out. The spiral was permanently magnetized from the heat during that run.

Here is our entry from St. Paul, MN. Xcel Energy has converted the High Bridge power plant from coal to natural gas in order to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate pollutants like mercury. They are demolishing sections of the site no longer active and will convert them for community use.
