De la Rey Song - with English subtitles
The controversial song by Bok van Blerk about the Anglo-Boer War that caused an outcry of indignation in South Africa. As the British tried to do a hundred years ago, the black majority government is now trying to suppress the Afrikaner nation's culture - and in fact all traces of their history. Public funding is being withdrawn from Afrikaner monuments, even though Afrikaners contribute more than their share to tax income. Millions are being spent on changing the names of towns, streets etc. while little is done to maintain infrastructure. The new generation of Afrikaners had nothing to do with Apartheid, yet they are faced with a bleak future, suffering under racial discrimination in the form of affirmative action. Although this excludes them from jobs and promotion beyond a certain level, it also stimulates entrepreneurship and innovative thinking. The Afrikaner nation will rise again to take its place in the country their forefathers helped to build and develop.

An Afrikaans song based on General De La Rey, a Boer general during the Boer war against the British. I am a Dutch Canadian and I know a little bit of Dutch, which is very similar to Afrikaans. In fact, many Boers are of Dutch descent. I am reading the lyrics as I play, so i mess up a few times, but hey I tried!

General Jacobus Herculaas de la Rey, known as Koos de la Rey, is generally regarded as the bravest of the Boer generals during the Second Boer War, using guerrilla tactics to great effect. De la Rey opposed any confrontation with Britain, but when the time for war came, he continued fighting long after everyone else had given up. For two more years he led a mobile campaign, winning battles at Moedwil, Nooitgedacht, Driefontein, Donkerhoek, and inflicting large losses of men and material on the British at Ysterspruit, where enough ammunition and supplies were captured to reinvigorate the Boer forces. At Tweebosch, he captured the British commander Lord Methuen. Albeit ragged and often hungry, his men roamed at will over vast areas and tied down tens of thousands of British troops. Despite some reverses, such as the Battle of Rooiwal, De la Rey's commandos, numbering up to 3000 men, remained in the field until the end of the war. Interest in the life and career of Koos de La Rey has recently made a resurgence among Afrikaners, in no small part due to this song dedicated to him by Bok van Blerk.

I brought together two of my favourites: the movie ''Lawrence of Arabia'' and the song ''De la Rey'', by Bok Van Blerk. This is a tribute to many (not particularly in this order): the actor Anthony Quinn, the sheikh Auda abu Tayi of the Howeitat, the arabs and their struggle against the turks during WWI, the Boer general Koos de la Rey, the afrikaners and their struggle for freedom. And it is my honor to use this clip as a character presentation in the online mmorpg browser game ''Magic Duel''. Long Live The Fighters!

Welcome back to another video of mine. Given that my Pa is Afrikaans, I thought I'd share my favourite Afrikaans track to commemorate my South African roots. Although this song is about the Boer Wars, I like the beat and it's a nice song to listen to whenever I'm drinking my milk and getting ready for bed. For those who don't know about the Boer Wars... They were two wars fought around the late 1800's between the British and South Africa (Orange Free State & Transvaal Republic). This song represents that war. Enjoy what I call, the ultimate lullaby song.
