Randy Newman - "Dayton, Ohio - 1903" from his 1972 album "Sail Away" (Reprise). On his third studio album, Randy Newman found a middle ground between the heavily orchestrated pop of his debut and the more stripped-down, rock-oriented approach of 12 Songs, and managed to bring new strength to both sides of his musical personality in the process. The title track, which Newman has described as a sort of commercial jingle written for slave traders looking to recruit naïve Africans, and "Old Man," in which an elderly man is rejected with feigned compassion by his son, were set to Newman's most evocative arrangements to date and rank with the most intelligent and effective use of a large ensemble by anyone in pop music. On the other end of the scale, "Last Night I Had a Dream" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On" are lean, potent mid-tempo rock tunes, the former featuring some slashing and ominous slide guitar from Ry Cooder, and the latter a witty and willfully perverse bit of erotic absurdity that later became a hit for Joe Cocker (who sounded as if he took the joke at face value). Downtown Dayton Ohio 1970
8mm film shot in 1970 of downtown Dayton Ohio as part of a film project during my Junior year at Chaminade High School. Filmed by Joseph Slonaker, Gus Miklos and Steve Murphy. I remember we showed it in the auditorium set to the music of "Classical Gas". We wanted it to be "quick cuts" just like the famous film shown on the Smothers Brothers show of art work set to the same music. Of course we had no editing equipment, so we had to shoot it that way in the camera. It took weeks of walking around in our spare time to get this 8 1/2 minutes of film. Looks pretty cheesy now, but at the time everyone thought it was pretty far out and groovy, man! You can make out some of the old buildings of Dayton that are since long gone.

Adrian Belew at Canal Street Dayton Oh Summer 2009--Part 2
The Adrian Belew Power Trio from the summer of 2009 at Dayton, Ohio's Canal Street Tavern. It is a very intimate setting and one the handful of rooms that Adrian can safely call home. It isn't air conditioned very well and this is a very hot evening so all of the doors to the street are open. The band? Loose because of the heat but hot, because of their discipline the Slicks are a great brother sister team. They are also early graduates of Paul Green's school of rock in Philadelphia. Belew, of course, is the front man for the legendary King Crimson, a former stunt guitarist of Frank Zappa's and the Talking Heads', and the two time musical director for David Bowie. He hails from nearby Florence, Kentucky. Robert Fripp, Mr. KIng Crimson himself, is famous for hiring people and then telling them, "Whatever it is that you were playing before you joined King Crimson, if you'd be so kind as to not do it now that you are in the band." Adrian Belew is the only person to my knowledge who was hired to join KC because of who he was before he joined--the most inventive guitarist and frontman/sideman in the business.
