Richard Dawkins vs Cardinal George Pell on Q&A (10-4-2012)

Richard Dawkins and Catholic Cardinal George Pell discuss religion, morals and evolution on Q&A. (10-4-2012 ABC TV) It baffles me how the Catholic hierarchy can concede most of the bible stories are myths, but continue to teach it as fact in Sunday school, religious schools and in church. The only part of the bible the Catholic church stands by is the death and resurrection of Christ. If the most senior catholics dont believe 99% of the bible why should anyone else?

Hitchens, Dawkins & Grayling

socraticmama.com [Inspiration & Support for Secular Families] My other version with the Numpty speeches removed: www.youtube.com www.intelligencesquared.com 27th March 2007, debate: "We would be better off without religion" PROPOSING THE MOTION: Christopher Hitchens, Professor Richard Dawkins & AC Grayling. Christopher Hitchens begins by making the case for religion being at the root of many conflicts that have shaped the 20th-21st century world, citing the current situations in the Balkans, the Middle East, and Northern Ireland. Here, it has been intra-faith disputes that have caused or aggravated the conflicts and slowed political and social progress. Richard Dawkins focuses his support for the motion on the blind faith that leads even intelligent people to deny key scientific principles, citing many American students' opposition to the theory of evolution as an example. Anthony Grayling illustrates how the Bible's view of what constitutes a good person is at odds with the modern Western view of what constitutes a good person, arguing that it is possible to appreciate the natural world and feel such emotions as empathy, sympathy, and love without holding religious views. OPPOSING THE MOTION: Dr Nigel Spivey, Roger Scruton & Rabbi Julia Neuberger. Dr Nigel Spivey opens the opposition by offering an archaeological and anthropological perspective. Pointing to the "Creative Explosion" of 40000 years ago, he suggests that religion is a concept that is part of the human ...

Richard Dawkins demonstrates the evolution of the eye

Creationists and supporters of Intelligent Design like to point to what they call the "irreducible complexity" of the eye as proof of the existence of a designer/creator. In other words, they like to say that complex components of our physiology like the eye could not have come about through a process of evolution because they are not of any use until everything is in place and working. In this excerpt from his "Growing Up In The Universe" series of lectures, Professor Dawkins demonstrates how something complex like the eye can indeed evolve.

Richard Dawkins vs George Pell - Q&A (Part 1) - 4/10/2012

Former evolutionary biologist at Oxford University and cadid atheist Dr. and professor Richard Dawkins debates the archbishop of Sydney Cardinal George Pell. The topics range from the church's current view on evolution to the equality of homosexuals in our community. All the topics covered in the debate are listed below in detail. VALUES OF ATHEISM AND FAITH NAOMI ROSETH asked: At Easter Australia's religious leaders invoke the power of God to preach peace, love, political integrity, and moral fortitude - all positive, worthwhile values. In what way are all these values dependent on the existence of a god? Is it not possible for an atheist to be peace loving and socially responsible? IS RELIGION A FORCE FOR GOOD CLARE BONNER asked: Religion is often blamed for being the root of war and conflict But what about all the good it has done for our society? God-centred religion has also been the birthplace of schools, universities, hospitals, AND countless developments in science. Richard, if you believe the human drive to seek the Truth and constantly improve ourselves is merely a mechanism for survival, then what's the point and why should I bother? VALUES OF "SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST"? REBEKAH RAY asked: Without religion, where is the basis of our values or in time, will we revert back to Darwin's evolutionary ideas of survival of the fittest? DAWKINS -- ATHEIST OR AGNOSTIC? PAUL HANRAHAN asked: You are on the record as admitting that you can't prove that God doesn't exist and ...

Richard Dawkins Struggles to Remember "Origin of the Species" Title Against Rev Giles Fraser.

According to Dawkins' own logic, failing to remember the title of Darwin's book proves he's not a true evolutionist. He eventually got the last 3rd, full title is: "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life"! Dawkins claims he was "ambushed", despite already saying "yes" to whether he could remember it! Will he do better against The Archbishop of Canterbury? Richard Dawkins: The Blind Watch Maker (BBC)

Please Subscribe To The EvolutionDocumentary YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com Broadcast (1987) Another Richard Dawkins presentation based on one of his books (which won the Royal Society of Literature Award). In the programme, he refutes the claims of creationists that Darwinism cannot be credible because blind chance alone would not produce the complexity of organisms as they exist. "The Blind Watchmaker" creationist argument was coined by Rev. William Paley (1743-1805) 50 years before Darwin's theory of evolution. Dawkins demonstrates how the eye could have evolved in stages, each simple and a result of random variation, but connected by a natural selection of those organisms which become more successful. In the early stages even with an incomplete eye, the benefit of even partial vision discriminating only between light and dark would be more useful than no vision. The structure of the surface of the "new" (in 1987) optical storage disc is related to the structure of the eye of the moth. A computer program produces generations of biomorphs using incremental random variation. See www.rennard.org for an applet Engineers apply the principles of evolutionary variation, for example in a windmill that uses stationary vanes of suitable design to concentration even gentle wind onto a smaller central rotor that turns more powerfully as a result.
