Darfur in 10 Minutes: An Overview of the Conflict in Sudan
Note 1: We are often asked if this video can be used by people for their projects. Yes. Don't plagiarize, quote, credit and/or footnote correctly. Love more. May it help! Note: Ivan is available to talk at your school or anywhere else, or to be asked questions at darfurintenminutes@hotmail.com A brief overview of the Darfur conflict from a friend of mine who has spent a considerable amount of time "on the ground" there. The overview describes three of the significant "drivers" that explain what is going on in Darfur, but also show why decreasing the misery is so difficult. The three "drivers" are 1) ethnicity, 2) oil (mostly China, in the ongoing "scramble for Africa"), and 3) desertification/climate change. I hope this overview is helpful. Any informative comments are greatly appreciated. As a personal note, with the Darfur hell so centred around oil, I can't help but think of the Iraq hell, that also began in 2003, and has likely resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians—basically folks like you and me. Don't you just dream of a time when enough people actually say, "No"—and it has meaning? Maybe that time is closer than we know. Darfur has been termed genocide. The crisis has claimed the lives of over 300000 civilians. The state sponsored Janjaweed Militia, with the support of Sudanese Government Forces, are responsible for the majority of the rape, torture and murder. 2.8 million Darfuri have been displaced within Sudan. 3.8 million people are dependent on international humanitarian aid. One half of these people are beyond the reach of such help. For more informations please visit: www.standcanada.org

Sudan Darfur Clooney, Bush, Ocampo, Israel lobby and their Blacks This original video has just over 2000 views. if you think we are too lazy to believe George Clooney instantly, please share and mirror to spread different aspects. ******************************************* www.youtube.com The story of genocide in Darfur is a terrible one, not because there is a genocide in Darfur, but because the war there today between the rebels of Darfur and the government of Khartoum, is supported and financed by foreign powers. There are certain blacks in southern Sudan who have problems like those of Darfur but these are historical problems connected to English colonization. The English colonization favored the north, which today is considered to be Muslim, or Arab, and the people of the south were abandoned. And this system continued right up to the time of independence and then after independence. So, the real problems that presented themselves in Darfur as well as in southern Sudan, are problems of regional stability in terms of infrastructure, education, jobs... But there's a desire to stir up hate between the Muslims or Arab-Muslims and the Christians and animists in southern Sudan and this manipulation is organized and orchestrated today by those who want to create instability in Sudan. The first reason why the West wants to get rid of President Al-Bashir is that he fought in the 1973 Yom Kippur war against Israel. He was in the Egyptian army, as a Sudanese. Second reason ...
Darfur Genocide Video - Personal Account An American Witness
Darfur Region - Sudan Genocide on border of Chad and the doorway to the Arab worlds. The Darfur conflict is a complex crisis in the Darfur region of western Sudan. One side of the armed conflict is composed mainly of the Sudanese military and the Janjaweed, a militia group recruited mostly from the tribes of the northern Rizeigat, camel-herding nomads. The other side comprises a variety of rebel groups, notably the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement, recruited primarily from the land-tilling Fur, Zaghawa, and Massaleit ethnic groups. The Sudanese government, while publicly denying that it supports the Janjaweed, has provided money and assistance to the militia and has participated in joint attacks targeting the tribes from which the rebels draw support. The conflict began in February 2003. Unlike in the Second Sudanese Civil War, which was fought between the primarily Muslim north and Christian and Animist south, almost all of the combatants and victims in Darfur are Muslim. The government and Janjaweed attacks upon the non-Baggara civilian populace have resulted in a major humanitarian crisis. There are many casualty estimates, most concurring on a range within the hundreds of thousands. The United Nations (UN) estimates that the conflict has left as many as 450000 dead from violence and disease. Most NGOs (non-governmental organizations) use 200000 to over 400000, a figure from the Coalition for International Justice that has since been cited ...
Sudan army kills Darfur rebel leader
The Sudanese army said it killed the leader of the main Darfur rebel group, touting his death as a key victory against a powerful rebel force. Khalil Ibrahim, who led the Justice and Equality Movement, died of his wounds after a military offensive in North Kordofan state, which borders the western region of Darfur. He was considered one of Khartoum's most powerful opponents in Darfur. His movement, in its most stunning display of might, launched an attack in the outskirt of Khartoum that shook the government. At least 200 people, including rebels, civilians and security, died in that attack. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports from the Sudanese capital.
Teachers seek education for Darfur girls
Teachers, along with international aid groups, are working on increasing education for girls in Darfur, Sudan. Amani Abdul Baker, once a student, sits at home to do daily house chores as her father was forced to take her out of school due to lack of funds. Amani is like many Darfur women of her generation as many of them can't afford to attend school. In Nyala, the capital of the South Darfur, education is seen as something Amani's family can't provide her with due to limited financial resources. However, she is positive and hopes that this will change, and other girls might be able to attend school in future. "When I'm staying at home and I see other girls go to school it makes me sad," she said. "In this village, there are more girls at home than at school," she added. In Sudan's Darfur region resources are limited, with a shortage of desks, chairs, books and stationery, which make education tough. The girls who can attend school consider themselves the lucky ones, especially those who could have stayed home to help with household tasks. More than fifty percent of the South Darfur girls will never receive education or even be admitted to a classroom due to either poverty or the widespread early marriage. Habiba Ahmed, a fifteen-year-old, is one of the few girls in this region who was fortunate to receive education. She hopes one day to become a nurse. Habiba and her classmates feel secure, with support of their teachers along with the United Nation Children's Fund ...

Darfur Now
In this in-depth documentary, Academy Award-nominee Don Cheadle ("Hotel Rwanda," "Crash") examines genocide in Sundan's western region and takes a closer look at the consequences of the conflict between the Sudanese government sponsored militia group known as Janjaweed and the various rebel groups that are comprised of mostly civilians. The results are hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of people displaced throughout neighboring countries seeking refuge. With this huge crisis taking place, nations have been slow to aide and assist the suffering civilians, but have been slowly coming to aide. This film is a call to action for people everywhere to help stop the genocide in Darfur, as it follows the struggles and achievements of six very different individuals bring to light the situation in Darfur and illustrate the absolute need to get involved. Darfur Dilemma - Sudan
November 2008 General Martin Luther Agwais job is difficult - keep the peace in war-ravaged Darfur. But recently a new problem has presented itself the government-backed janjaweed has started targeting peacekeepers. Patrolling the vast, barren wastelands of West Sudan, General Agwais troops tread an uneasy line between rebels and government forces. His task is to prevent the violence that has already killed 300000 civilians and threatens to engulf Sudan in civil war. The General is head of the UN-led African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur. But presently in Darfur there is no peace to keep, says General Agwai dryly. That makes our job difficult. The situation for the peacekeepers is deteriorating. Were now being targeted, Agwai tells us. In July this year peacekeeping forces were attacked in a brutal and highly organised way. Agwai believes that the government-backed Janjaweed were behind the attack. So does the UN. In peace talks Agwais forces are criticised by both the rebels and the government but Agwai points out that talking is preferable to fighting. I love it when I hear everyone criticising us, he says cheerfully. That means we are neutral. An impressive account of courage under fire. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures
Hell in Darfur - Sudan
April 2008 Violence in Darfur is intensifying, the UN reports 300000 dead in the conflict so far. Another tide of refugees is flooding across the border to camps in Eastern Chad, but the region is near collapse. "I don't believe this situation is sustainable," reveals Jorge Holly of the UN, "the best solution is for the refugees to return to Darfur". But Government backed Janjaweed attacks on villages have increased in the last weeks, and newly arrived EU troops are yet to make an impact. Akabr Abdallah and his family are newly arrived in Chad. They gaze at the camp they believe may be their home for up to ten years, "there are so many soldiers, how can we hope for peace?" Eastern Chad's limited resources are under massive pressure. Environmental damage caused by the hundreds of thousands of displaced is huge, and the local population is angry.

Barack Obama on Darfur
Barack Obama answers the Save Darfur Coalition's questions about his plan to end the genocide in Darfur
Nine years on is the UN still failing Darfur? 21/03/12
Since the start of the 2003 conflict in Darfur, questions have been raised about the role played by the United Nations and the viability of its mandate. With the recent expulsion from Chad of the former UN head in Sudan during the original outbreak of violence in Darfur, and the crisis edging towards its first decade, is there any more that the UN can do? Or has the situation reached a level that is beyond resolution? After the UN came under fire for not having done enough to help civilians during recent attacks, we will be discussing how the enduring situation in Darfur reflects on the UN. Join us at the Frontline Club to discuss the actions of the UN and whether they are still failing Darfur. What could be done to reduce the possibility of future failures? Chaired by Patrick Smith, editor of Africa Confidential. With: Dr. Mukesh Kapila CBE, former Under Secretary General, National Society and Knowledge Development for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies based in Geneva.
