Darbari Kangra / Kanada or simply Darbari, is a Hindustani raga in the Kanada family, which is thought to have originated in Carnatic music and brought into North Indian music by Miyan Tansen, the legendary 16th century composer in emperor Akbar's court. This tradition is reflected in the name itself; Darbar is the Persian derived word in Hindi meaning "court." As the most familiar raga in the Kanada family, it may sometimes also be called Shuddha Kanada or pure Kanada. It belongs to the Asavari thaat.[1] Darbari is a grave raga, played deep into the night, considered to be one of the more difficult to master, and with the potential for profound emotional impact.

Arshad Ali Raag Darbari Part-2
Arshad Ali Khan :- Arshad Ali is one of the few prodigies to live up to their initial promise. Arshad, the grandson of the legendary sarangi maestro late Padmashree Ustad Shakoor Khan, was absorbed into the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, as a scholar at the age of six. Born in the family of the principal Kirana Gharana musicians, he received extensive taleem from his maternal uncles, Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan in the true guru-shishya parampara system of training, steeped with exclusivity of ragas and unheard bandishes. GHARANA : Today, Arshad is hailed as a maestro par excellence. He is one of the few contemporary singers of the Kirana Gharana to have assimilated the essence of the meer-khand vistar or development, typical to the gharana. His style, while strikingly original in its creative exposition of the Raag, is steeped in a traditional mould. His ability to balance his performances with sensitive alap / vistar, note by note delineation of swaras, complex sargams , an onslaught of lightening fast multifarious taans with emotive yet meditative pukaars has set him a class apart from his fellow vocalists. He is hailed as among the greatest virtuoso vocalists of the country, given his repertoire and competency in all aspects of Khayal gayaki. As a child, he became one of the most celebrated "Little Ustad" of our country. In the year 1993, at the age of nine, he was described as "the biggest sensation of Sawai Gandharva Sammelan" following ...

Biswajit Roy Chowdhary: Raga Darbari Kanada
Masters of Indian Classical Music XI. 19th of March, 2011 at Trafo, Budapest Biswajit Roy Chowdhary - Sarod Abhijit Banerjee - Tabla Pandit Biswajit Roy Chowdhary was born in 1956, in Deogarh, Chowdhury was initiated into music by his father Shri Ranajit Roy Chowdhary, who was teacher of chemistry by profession but, more importantly, a serious Sarod player trained under the Late Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan and others. In 1978, Roy Chowdhury's talents were spotted by the Maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan accepting him as a disciple. A turning point came when Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur took an interest in young Roy Chwdhury's quest in 1982. The union of an instrument player with Pandit Mansur set the journey on the path of fulfilling this quest. Biswajit Roy Chowdhary's tutelage with Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur was formalized in a gandhabandhan ceremony in 1985 and the intensive guidance and training lasted till the demise of the guru in 1992. He is perhaps the only Sarod player who plays the coveted compositions from the Jaipur-Atrauli tradition. Masters of Indian Classical Music series: raga.hu Trafo: trafo.hu

Darbari mood ......!
Meditation goes with Nikhil Banerjee ..... !!! Raag Darbari -by Pandit Nikhil Banerjee (Complete Recording) vimeo.com www.divshare.com A Syed Wajid's Presentation ---------- Q. Does your music today directly or indirectly reflect some of those influences? 'Yes, of course! To be very frank, yes, I'm very much influenced by a few musicians. One thing my teacher Allauddin Khansahib used to say, he being a very conservative musician, but he always used to say, "Collect anything, good thing, from any music from anywhere in the world!" Allauddin Khansahib being such a strict and conservative type, every night I can very well remember, every night from 9 till 11 o'clock. All-India Radio used to broadcast Western classical music. And every day from 9 till 11 he used to hear that, and he liked that Western classical music so much that he used to say, "Just listen to this music, how much they have perfected a note! Each note correct and so much in tune!" In that respect he used to always say that you should collect and get whatever you get from anybody, from anywhere in the world. So naturally, I used to hear all kinds of music but two musicians have influenced me very much in my life: naturally one is Allauddin Khansahib; I consider him as really incomparable. Depth! It is all interlinked; as a man, as a musician, so kind-hearted to everybody, every animal, each thing was considered, and each thing has touched my heart. Such a great in every respect! I'm also very much influenced ...

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri - 1986 - Darbari Kannada, Adana, and Bhairavi
Two legendary musicians, in full command of their respective instruments, perform Raga Darbari Kannada in jhaptal (10 beat cycle), Raga Adana in tintal (16 beat cycle), and Raga Bhairavi in tintal, jhaptal, and ektal (12 beat cycle). Tabla players take note of Swapan-da's relatively restrained accompaniment in Darbari (compared to the Jhinjhoti from the first half that is posted separately) reflecting the more sombre mood of the raga. I mention this because I often hear tabla players playing too fast or too long and disrupting the mood of the raga which the vocalist or instrumentalist has painstakingly created. Swapan-da performs more playfully in the Jhinjhoti and more subdued in the Darbari and by doing so preserves the mood created by Khan-sahib.
