He's there along with thousands of pilgrims from Tibet, the Himalayan regions, Bhutan, Korea, China, and from the West. Hollywood star Richard Gere visited the Bodhgaya, a holy place of worship for the Buddhists, in India on Wednesday. Gere was there alongside some 200 thousand other Buddhist followers. The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, is giving a 10-day teaching on the Kalachakra in Gaya, the second largest city in Bihar, India. Gaya is believed to be where the Buddha attained enlightenment. The Hollywood actor is a practicing Buddhist and is considered one of the Dalai Lama's most high-profile followers. Better known for his cult films like "Pretty Woman" and "Runaway Bride," he frequently visits Dharamsala, the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile.

Dalai Lama in London to Receive £1.1 Million Templeton Prize
The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, held a news conference in London prior to his formal acceptance of this year's Templeton Prize, worth £1.1 Million pounds. The Templeton Prize is the world's largest annual monetary award given to an individual. The Dalai Lama is being honoured for his long standing engagement with multiple dimensions of science and with people far beyond his own religious traditions. He accepted the award with great humility and said His holiness was then asked by Jonathan Dimbleby what he will do with the award money. A Brief Biography His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is both the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet. He was born on 6 July 1935, to a farming family, in a small hamlet located in Taktser, Amdo, northeastern Tibet. At the age of two the child, who was named Lhamo Dhondup at that time was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. The Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who have postponed their own nirvana and chosen to take rebirth in order to serve humanity. Education in Tibet His Holiness began his monastic education at the age of six. The curriculum consisted of five major and five minor subjects. The major subjects were logic, Tibetan art and culture, Sanskrit, medicine, and Buddhist philosophy which was further divided into a further five categories: Prajnaparimita, the perfection of wisdom; Madhyamika, the philosophy of the middle Way; Vinaya, the canon of monastic discipline; Abidharma, metaphysics; and Pramana, logic and epistemology. The five minor subjects were poetry, music and drama, astrology, motre and phrasing, and synonyms. At 23 he sat for his final examination in the Jokhang Temple, Lhasa, during the annual Monlam (prayer) Festival in 1959. He passed with honours and was awarded the Geshe Lharampa degree, the highest-level degree equivalent to a doctorate of Buddhist ...

Dalai Lama Alleges Chinese Assassination Attempt
Tibetan leader Dalai Lama alleged that Chinese agents were plotting to kill him. In an interview with the Sunday telegraph, this 76 year old said that Chinese agents were training Tibetan women for this task. According to him, these women were to poison their hair and their scarf before they came to the Buddhist monk for blessings and a hand touch. The dalai lama has expressed concerns over his safety and security. He said that his aides could confirm the plot made by Chinese agents. Dalai Lama, believed to be the supreme leader of Tibetans, is in exile since 1959. He had fled China with his disciples and took refuge in India when the Chinese army took control of Lhasa. The Tibetan government in exile is based in Dharamsala in India. They have maintained their demand for a self rule over Tibet ever since. In the past year, more than 30 Tibetan protesters in China have immolated themselves. Even amidst political turmoil in Tibet and a threat to his life, The Dalai Lama visited London today to receive the Templeton Prize of 1.7 million USD at St. Paul's Cathedral. He announced that he was donating 1.5 million USD of the prize money to an organization 'Save the Children' working with malnourished in India.
