Considered a cult film by some, 'Party Girl' (1958) was the first dramatic role for Cyd Charisse and was brilliantly rendered in Metrocolor and Cinemascope by cinematographer Robert J. Bronner in this late great MGM musical. The first dance sequence is from 'It's Always Fair Weather' (1955), not only one of the more cynical and moodier musicals of it's heyday but also one of the last, the studios had a double whammy to what otherwise considered a sure thing, audiences had started to tire of lavish musical productions and Television had become a major competitor. The second sequence is cut from the famous interlude between Kelly and Charisse from "Singin' in the Rain' (1952) in what today is still considered the best example of the MGM musical comedy. Charisse was born as Tula Ellice Finklea in Amarillo, Texas. The nickname "Sid" was taken from a sibling trying to say "Sis". It was later spelled "Cyd" at MGM to give her an air of mystery. After battling childhood polio she used ballet as a medium for healing and later became an accomplished ballerina traveling the globe until she was discovered by choreographer Robert Alton, who also discovered Gene Kelly. Later in life Charisse made occasional public appearances and appeared frequently in documentaries spotlighting the golden age of Hollywood. She made her Broadway debut in 1992 in the musical version of Grand Hotel as the aging ballerina, Elizaveta Grushinskaya.
