You see, there's no historical basis for a close Corvette-Mustang rivalry. A Corvette of any year is a little too fast and smart to be street racing ratty muscle cars. It's a real sports car, the kind of car that's still fun when you start going around corners. But maybe it's a different story with this 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR and 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Each of these rear-wheel-drive coupes has a V8 rated for more than 500 horsepower at the flywheel. And with the release of the limited-edition 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, Ford has moved in on Chevrolet's price territory. 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 hits the Nürburgring
To demonstrate the improvements on the 2012 Corvette, Chevrolet has returned to the Nürburgring with the range-topping ZR1. As the video shows, the car - which features a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine with 638 hp (476 kW / 647 PS) and 604 lb-ft (818 Nm) of torque - lapped the legendary Nordschleife in 7:19.63 which is more than six seconds faster than the previous Corvette record that was set back in 2008. To get the improved time, the ZR1 was equipped with the new PDE performance package which has a full-width rear spoiler and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires that are "optimized for warm, dry conditions to increase cornering and handling capability." www.worldcarfans.com

It was a pretty fast track and it was his first time up since his last break so the tires were pretty cold & so was the track. The driver was shaken up quite a bit, but he walked away. I heard the screeching tires and the impact from my office, and grabbed the camcorder. Day-amn! This graduate of the Lance Briggs School of Hi-Performance Driving had hit the retaining wall so hard, it sheared the spokes right off the rim of one of the wheels. Steel and rubber doughnut, anyone? Clear, dry road, gentle curve, wide, well-marked lanes, beautiful, mild 50-degree Friday morning -- how do they continue to do it? Oh, well, as long as they do, you'll see it here first.
