THIS IS PUBLIC DOMAIN Corny Concerto is an American animated short produced by Leon Schlesinger Productions and distributed by Warner Bros. It was directed by Bob Clampett, written by Frank Tashlin, animated by Robert McKimson and released as part of the Merrie Melodies series on September 25, 1943. A parody of Disney's 1940 feature Fantasia, the film uses two of Johann Strauss' best known waltzes, Tales from the Vienna Woods and The Blue Danube, adapted by the cartoon unit's music director, Carl Stalling and orchestrated by its arranger and later, Stalling's successor, Milt Franklyn. Long considered a classic for its sly humor and impeccable timing with the music, it was voted #47 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field in 1994. The title, in tune with the name of the unit's other cartoon series, Looney Tunes, suggests another Disney titling parody, that of the pioneering series Silly Symphonies.

South Pacific - A Wonderful Guy - Some Enchanted Evening - Mary Martin
Mary Martin and Wilbur Evans sing "Some Enchanted Evening" in the 1952 London production. Mary then sings "Wonderful Guy" - one of the best examples of the deceptive simplicity of Richard Rodgers' music. Rodgers gives the verse a driving, aggressive beat (to emphasize Nellie's determination), and then does not start the chorus on the second beat as you would expect from reading the lyric: "i'm as CORny as kansas in AUGust." Instead, he starts it on the first beat: "I'M as corny as KANsas in august" ...giving the song its distinctive feel and playing up Nellie's anger while still offering a light, happy tune. But the real genius comes in one of his favorite tricks: the repeated phrase. While it appears that "I'm in love" is simply repeated 16 times in a row, in fact the orchestra is changing chords on each "love," frantically running through the series and building to a powerful climax. No one could pair a simple melody with complex chords better than Rodgers, and it's one of the reasons his tunes are both so accessible and so enduring. .

1985-86 Boston Celtics: Sweet Sixteen Part 1/7
If there was any doubt that Larry Bird deserved to be ranked among the greatest players in basketball history, he dispelled it with a masterful 1985-86 season. Bird did everything that year, finishing fourth in the league in points (25.8 ppg), seventh in rebounds (9.8 rpg), and ninth in steals (2.02 per game). He led the league in free throw percentage (.896) and finished fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.423). He also led his team in assists with 6.8 per game. Bird's stellar numbers earned him a third consecutive MVP Award. Only two other players had claimed Most Valuable Player honors three years running: Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain. Bird wasn't the only Boston player to have a good year. Kevin McHale averaged 21.3 points, and the Celtics got a good performance out of Bill Walton, newly acquired from the Clippers, who resurrected an injury-plagued career by appearing in 80 games and contributing 7.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Walton earned the NBA Sixth Man Award at season's end. Boston rode roughshod over the league, then lost only one game in the first three rounds of the playoffs. Los Angeles had been stunned by Houston in the Western Conference Finals, so the Celtics found themselves facing the Rockets in the 1986 NBA Finals. Despite Houston's "Twin Towers," Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson, Boston took the series in six games. It was the club's 16th NBA title.
