The central question that we're wrestling with in this text is how we can get serious in this country about not just reducing but indeed eradicating poverty. There are three things that we're clear about. Number 1, which answers your question, is that poverty has to be made a priority in this country. At the moment it is not a priority, not just for our government but for the American people. Now one out of two Americans are either in poverty or near poverty — that's half the country — so we are hopeful that our government and the American people in this election year will get more vocal about demanding that ...

CORNEL WEST (Part 1 of 7)
If you view this series of videos you will be treated to a great stand up performance by one of the worlds best thinkers and speakers. Professor Cornel West manages to be both informative and entertaining. His style is a cross between preacher, pundit and prophet. He embodies the spirit of Socialism and Christianity, as he inspires us all: young, old, black, white, yellow & red. No man packs more humanity in his ideas. Our man graduated from Harvard, cum laude and went on to receive a masters and Phd from Princeton, where he now teaches. I was very fortunate to catch his act at a local community college where I take classes. This clip is the first of seven parts. Part 2 can be found here: www.youtube.com

EXAMINED LIFE (Clip)
www.nfb.ca "The unexamined life is not worth living." — Socrates Examined Life pulls philosophy out of academic journals and classrooms, and puts it back on the streets. Philosophers have long done their best thinking when directly engaging with the outside world, not in isolation from it. Socrates roved the Athenian agora, courting trouble with the authorities. Rousseau immortalized his rambles through nature on the printed page. Nietzsche once said that only ideas conceived while walking have any value. In Examined Life, filmmaker Astra Taylor accompanies some of today's most influential thinkers on a series of unique excursions through places and spaces that hold particular resonance for them and their ideas. Peter Singer's thoughts on the ethics of consumption are amplified against the backdrop of Fifth Avenue's posh boutiques. Michael Hardt ponders the nature of revolution while surrounded by symbols of wealth and leisure. Judith Butler and a friend stroll through San Francisco's Mission District questioning our culture's fixation on individualism. And while driving through Manhattan, Cornel West - perhaps America's best-known public intellectual - compares philosophy to jazz and blues, reminding us how intense and invigorating a life of the mind can be. Offering privileged moments with great thinkers from fields ranging from moral philosophy to cultural theory, Examined Life reveals philosophy's power to transform the way we see the world around us and imagine our ...

TEDxEroilor - Cornel Vîlcu - "Now it begins / [Яe]Descoperă Roșia Montană"
Cornel Vîlcu, assistant professor, PhD at the Faculty of Letters (UBB Cluj), works in the field of general linguistics and semiotics. These are, or at least seem to be, extremely theoretical areas; however, in recent months, our speaker has become a civic and environmental activist, particularly involved in the "Save Rosia Montana" campaign. Since this other field is a very practical, empirical one, we can ask ourselves: how do these two territories reconcile, what can they 'say' to each other, to what extent do they interfere -- with positive or negative effects? What do theory of language and semiotics have in common with participating in social communication, forming public opinion, taking stand as a citizen? An 18 minute "reflection" which raises the question of how we see and manage the relationship between abstract and concrete, between principles and facts. TEDxEroilor - Cristina Pardanschi şi Cornel Răileanu - "Teatru utilitar"
"Within twelve years of teaching theater in university, we have developed our own experiments, a cumulus of exercises that have formed generations of actors viable and competitive. As often happens, on other meridians of the world, this method was already established. We refer here to two great personalities oversea: Neva Boyd and Viola Spolin, to whom we fully recognize their competence. Confirmation that we chose a just and verified way, has produced great satisfaction, and we decided to implement this study in the social sphere. Our approach is a pioneering in the social, cultural and educational Romanian landscape, and results in a complementary form of education."
