Constituent Meeting
A constituent meets with their WA State Representative...and finds out that they agree on two things. Author's note: As a State Representative, the best part of my job is meeting with and listening to constituents. It is the foremost responsibility of an elected official. We want to hear from you. I will drop whatever I am doing when a constituent shows up. In Washington State, you can look up your legislators here: apps.leg.wa.gov Sometimes-- but certainly not always-- the meetings can be awkward. This clip is not meant to make fun of constituents, but rather, to reflect the humor in the awkward meetings that sometimes take place-- especially when a constituent has been "prepped" to say certain things by an organization. Everyone should get to know their state legislators-- and should meet with them to share their views and concerns. You don't need to be an expert in the subject matter or in politics-- just be willing to speak from your heart and share YOUR perspective. Some tips for effective citizen lobbying: (1) Build authentic relationships with your legislators when the Legislature is not in session. Political campaign season provides great opportunities to get to know you local legislators. (2) When possible, try to give adequate advance notice to schedule a meeting. Be flexible- schedules during the legislative session are hectic. (3) Stay positive. Do not name-call or insult the person you are trying to persuade. Paul Ryan Booed By Seniors At Town Hall Meeting in Milton, Wisconsin 4-2011
During a town hall meeting in Milton, a constituent who described himself as a "lifelong conservative" asked Ryan about the effects of growing income inequality in our nation. The constituent noted that huge income disparities contributed to the Great Depression and the Great Recession, and thus wanted to know why the congressman was "fighting to not let the tax breaks for the wealthy expire." Ryan argued against "redistribut[ing" in this manner. After the constituent noted that "there's nothing wrong with taxing the top because it does not trickle down," Ryan argued that "we do tax the top." This response earned a chorus of boos from constituents: CONSTITUENT: The middle class is disappearing right now. During this time of prosperity, the top 1 percent was taking about 10 percent of the total annual income, but yet today we are fighting to not let the tax breaks for the wealthy expire? One of Pete Stark's Town Hall meetings was held in Fremont, California. Although the media reported that only one person was in opposition to Stark in San Leandro, Fremont was a different story. A senior citizen told Pete "don't pee on my leg and then tell me it's raining", Pete's reply: "I wouldn't dignify you by peeing on your leg - I wouldn't waste the urine". Not exactly Congressional level behavior in my opinion... Here is a condensed version of the meeting which gives you a flavor of the questions that opponents and supporters alike asked Stark.

The "Where Is Paul Ryan" Sit In Activisits Get Locked Out
The fifth day of the "Where Is Paul Ryan" Sit In and Protest started on a humid but pleasant note here in Kenosha. Upon arriving at Paul Ryan's constituent office, however, the activists found the doors locked and an entire crew of police in and around the building. It took some time to figure out exactly what was going on, but as outlined in the video, it seems that the staff of Paul Ryan's office, in collusion with the property owner, both filed a formal complaint against the protesters and they are now banned from the building. When asked what the specific complaint was, an officer on the scene would not answer. Long story short, the protest will go on outside for the moment. But why is the Congressman bringing in the police to kick a bunch of peaceful and unemployed constituents, that want nothing more than for the representative to schedule a public town hall like he has dozens of times before, out of his office. Is he just tired of them asking? Or is he somehow offended by the their message: that we need real job-creation legislation and not just tax breaks for corporations and billionaires. wisconsinjobsnow.org

At a Town Hall in Millerton, NY, on August 23, 2011, several of his constituents challenge him effectively on this point. Gibson has voted with the extreme right wing Republicans since he was elected last year. He was among those who held hostage the good credit of the United States, to preserve low tax rates for the very wealthy. He also voted to prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency from doing anything to limit the greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. When a Minuteman-- part of a group that voluntarily patrols the Mexican border and reports crossings by illegal immigrants--stood to ask a question, Stark first asked him, "Who are you going to kill today?" Then in response to the question itself, which was why the federal government wasn't doing more to seal the borders, Stark mockingly responded, "We'd like to get all the Minutemen armed so they can stop shooting people here."
