Yo-Yo Ma: Elgar Cello Concerto, 1st mvmt

Yo-Yo Ma with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago SO in this performance from 1997. This concerto will forever be associated with Jaqueline duPre, but YYM gives a performance that is beyond breathtaking. It is fitting that Barenboim is the conductor; I'm sure he feels this concerto is still in very good hands.

Like the movie series, its intensity commands attention. We just had to figure out a way to use it. In our usual style, we thought we'd create an "action movie soundtrack" that combined this and a piece of classical music. In the early 1700's Antonio Vivaldi wrote a concerto for an instrument that was then largely "undiscovered" by the music world -- the cello. Among the first cello solo pieces ever written, Vivaldi was gutsy enough to write it for not only one, but TWO solo cellos and string orchestra. With no "action movies" in the 1700's, this piece was probably the closest you could get to one. It has intense and exciting moments between beautiful lyrical moments. It was this piece, among others, that got Steven (the cello guy) excited about classical music—it was one of the first pieces he played with orchestra. 90% of this tune was written in 3 days. We worked on it day and night because it was so enjoyable to write. This video features Steve's newest cello "Thor." It was handmade for Steven by Dawson Swan out ...

Bach, Brandenburg Concerto #3, First Movement, Allegro

FAQ The first movement of Bach's third Brandenburg Concerto, BWV 1048,accompanied by a scrolling, bar-graph score. This concerto is unusual in that each of the three violins, three violas, and three violoncellos have solo parts. Q: Where can I see the score for this piece? A: The score that the bar-graph score is based on is here: www.musanim.com The first page of Bach's original manuscript is here: www.musanim.com Q: Who is playing this piece? A: The Advent Chamber Orchestra. I got this recording from the Wikimedia Commons: tinyurl.com This recording is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.0 License: creativecommons.org Q: What do the colors means? A: When the instruments in each section play in unison, there is a single fat (tall) note for all three; when they have solos, the notes are thinner (about half as high). The violins are shades of red, the violas are shades of green, and the violoncellos are shades of blue. The contrabass is sort of a brownish-gray, and is always wide, since it doesn't have solos. When two instruments play the same note, the colors blend (eg red + green = yellow). Q: Is there a way I could make bar-graph scores like this myself? A: The Music Animation Machine MIDI file player will generate a display like this (though not with the different note heights); you can get the (Windows) software here: www.musanim.com There are lots of places on the web where you can get MIDI files; I usually go to the Classical Archives site ...

Bach - Double Violin Concerto in D minor 2nd movement, Largo

Title : Johann Sebastian Bach, Double Violin Concerto in D minor (2nd movement, Largo Ma Non Tanto (BWV 1043) From Wikipedia , The Concerto for Two Violins in D minor (BWV 1043) is perhaps one of the most famous works by JS Bach and considered among the best examples of the work of the late Baroque period. Bach wrote it in Leipzig sometime between 1730 and 1731, most likely for the Leipzig Collegium Musicum, of which he was the director. It also exists in an arrangement for two harpsichords, transposed into C minor (BWV 1062). In addition to the two soloists, the concerto is scored for strings and basso continuo. The concerto is characterized by the subtle yet expressive relationship between the violins throughout the work. The musical structure of this piece uses fugal imitation and much counterpoint. The concerto comprises three movements: Vivace Largo ma non tanto Allegro

Mozart Piano Concerto No. 9, First Mvt, Mitsuko Uchida

Mitsuko Uchida plays piano and Jeffrey Tate conducts the Mozarteum Orchestra in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9 "Jeunehomme", in E flat major, K. 271. A Saltzburg Festival performance, recorded in the Mozarteum, Saltzburg, 1989 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed this concerto in Salzburg, 1777. Though only 21 years old, he displayed great maturity and originality in what is regarded by many as his first great masterpiece. It was composed for a Mlle. Jeunehomme, of whom very little is known (such as--her first name!). But she must have been a very fine pianist to be able to perform this! The mix of dramatic and intense emotions, some seemingly mad and anguished with parts of joy and happiness suggest (one romantically feels) that Mlle. Jeunehomme must have been quite a handful for the young Mozart. 1. Allegro, in E flat major and common (C) time 2. Andantino, in C minor and 3/4 time 3. Rondo (Presto), in E flat major and 2/2 time Dawn Chan notes: Renowned pianist Alfred Brendel has referred to Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9, known as the Jeunehomme, as a "wonder of the world," going so far as to assert that Mozart "did not surpass this piece in the later piano concertos." update-- thanks to Laemmerhirt, I moved past my old sources and got some new info! Christopher H. Gibbs wrote in 2005: WHAT'S IN A NAME? Countless beloved pieces of so-called classical music have a nickname, often one not given by the composer. Mozart would have no idea what the "Jupiter" Symphony is ...

Vanhal - Double Bass Concerto in D Major

Rinat Ibragimov, principal double bass of the London Symphony Orchestra together with Catherine Edwards, performs Jan Křtitel Vaňhal's Double Bass Concerto, originally written in Es Major but performed here a semitone lower. This popular piece of double bass repertoire is commonly called for in auditions, and here Rinat demonstrates its performance using the original bass part and the Viennese Tuning that would have been in vogue at the time of its composition. Rinat plays a d-bass by Matheus Albany, a gift from his colleague and friend Alexander Stepanov. He uses Pirastro Eudoxa strings.
