22. Emergence and Complexity

(May 21, 2010) Professor Robert Sapolsky gives a lecture on emergence and complexity. He details how a small difference at one place in nature can have a huge effect on a system as time goes on. He calls this idea fractal magnification and applies it to many different systems that exist throughout nature. The Complexity Of Life

www.facebook.com ... Complexity (Chapter 5): The Complexity Of Life --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- REDUCTIONISM For centuries, the standard approach of science has been to understand nature by breaking it down into smaller and smaller pieces. Consider a flower. If we study flowers in their natural environment, their various forms and features that makes us botanists. But in order to really understand how a flower works, how photosynthesis keeps the flower alive and allows it to grow, we have to get inside the flower. We might then study the cells that make up a flower, how the parts of the cell function, and how they are similar to cells of other living organisms. A cell biologist seeks to understand flowers on this level. But in order to understand how cells function, we need to understand the complex biochemistry of the cells metabolism. And in order to understand how the flowers cells divide and reproduce, we have to understand the operation of DNA. The biochemist and the geneticist, then seek to understand the flower on a deeper level still. The study of organic molecules and DNA takes us down to the level of basic chemistry. How do atoms and molecules interact and combine with one another? This is the realm of the chemist. And understanding the forces at work inside atoms is the job of the physicist. Through this approach - breaking down the flower into smaller and smaller parts, and understanding ...

Irreducible Complexity (bacterial flagellum) debunked

In this video from a lecture about the Kitzmiller trial, Ken Miller debunks Michael Behe's pseudoscience, "Irreducible Complexity". This is one of the main Creationist arguments against Evolution. Miller shows that the common example, bacterial flagellum, is not in fact irreducibly complex. If it were irreducibly complex, then removing parts should make them useless. However, this is not the case. The parts have functions of their own! Thus, "IC" is proven to be false. More on Michael Behe's false arguments here: www.talkorigins.org Why IC is a God of the Gaps (unscientific) explanation: www.talkorigins.org Even if there was a seemingly irreducibly complex system, that would not be a real argument against evolution as such. Just because science can't explain everything right now doesn't mean that it will be unable to do so in the future. "There must be a God because we cannot explain this", or "God of the gaps", is a concept which does not hold water, since that God disappears more and more, the more science explains. God of the Gaps is not science, it is pseudoscience. (Video credit: Kurpalac@YouTube)

The Illusion Of Complexity - Neuroactivity And Complex Behaviour

www.facebook.com ... Complexity (Chapter 6): The Illusion Of Complexity - Neuroactivity And Complex Behaviour. --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- ANTS Nature gives us a lot of examples of complex behavior emerging from the interaction of many individuals. The members of an ant colony are capable of a wide variety of complex behaviors: finding and transporting food, constructing elaborate underground complexes of tunnels and chambers, defending their territory from invaders. Such activity would seem to involve a great deal of planning, memory, and coordination. But there is no head ant who draws up a blueprint for the colony and gives directions to the worker ants. Instead, each ant follows a very simple set of rules, based on cues from its environment and from the activity of ants nearby. For example... how do ants know to walk in a single file to pick up food, and then return in single file to the nest? They dont. They know three simple rules. First, if you come upon something that smells like food - pick it up! Second, when you pick up a piece of food, release a chemical signal... a pheromone. Third, if you come across a pheromone trail left by another ant... follow it! There is no plan, no memory, no need for a leader to point the way. Three simple rules and a few environmental clues are all that is needed to orchestrate this remarkably efficient process. ROBOTS The enormous complexity of living things ...

Complexity (Chapter 2): Time Travel, Time's Arrow And Complexity --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- TIME REVERSAL Wouldn't you love to be able to travel in time? Authors through the ages have explored the tantalizing idea of being able to travel into the past or the future! Believe it or not, we are time-traveling right now ... into the future, one instant after another! But the question is: Does time only travel in one direction at one rate? If we watch Alabama Slim breaking the rack in a game of 8-ball, we can easily tell if time is running forward or backwards. The backwards sequence doesnt break any laws of physics, but the coming together of all of the right factors to make it happen is so improbable that we can use the words never happen and be absolutely right! In striking contrast, when two protons scatter off of each other, time seems totally reversible. The backwards version looks just like the forward version. So why is this so different from playing pool? The answer is that the interaction between the protons is simple. PRESENT Lets take a close look at how we experience time. Have you ever really thought about the difference between future and past? The difference between will and memory? The difference between hope and regret? You can narrow and focus your attention so that you observe that split-second of what is called the present. What you are focusing on and noticing is ...

From Simplicity To Complexity - Why Is The Universe So Complex?

www.facebook.com ... Complexity (Chapter 1): From Simplicity To Complexity - Why Is The Universe So Complex? --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- COMPLEXITY (Introduction) All normal matter in the universe is made from electrons and two other tiny little guys called quarks. Put those three thing together; let them interact, and you get all of the incredible complexity that makes the universe such an interesting place. But how does that happen? How do you go from such simplicity to such incredible complexity? We begin our journey in the world of the small. Basic particles are really really tiny. For a long time, people thought these particles had no size at all. But then along came quantum mechanics which proves it is impossible for anything real to have a size of zero. Today we know that fundamental particles have a real size, called a Planck Length ... named after Hall of Fame physicist, Max Planck. A Planck Length is so small it is hard to imagine, much less to describe. If a Plank length were as large as a grain of sand, then a proton would be the size of the earth. And an atom would be the size of the orbit of Jupiter. And a single grain of sand would be almost as large as the whole Milky Way Galaxy! Look at all these grains of salt ... to the naked eye they all look the same, but under a microscope, you can easily spot the differences. But every electron in the universe is absolutely identical to every ...
