Sage Hill School Stories: Service Learning
The Service Learning Program promotes intellectual growth, self-awareness, community engagement, and social entrepreneurship. Service learning at Sage Hill School is founded on a vision of a world where education and youth social entrepreneurship co-exist. This vision invites students to put their expertise to work by joining with others to bring about change in the broader community. One Wednesday a month Sage Hill students and their teachers pick up their heads from their books, set down their pens, push back from their computers, and apply their learning. Some connect personal aspirations to academics. Some celebrate the wonders of literacy. Some engage as scientists by building and caring for urban gardens. Some create sustainable social entrepreneur projects. For example, our tenth graders teach fourth graders writing skills at underserved elementary schools. Between outings, the English teachers take class time to help students assess what went well and what did not, so they may refine their lesson plans accordingly. By being obliged to teach writing to others, our students become better writers themselves, their fourth grade students improve, and the host organization is better able to deliver its mission. This integrated approach to community service- the linking of direct experience with formal academic training- is what we call service learning. Paris Hilton may have been ordered by a Las Vegas judge to perform community service, but on Friday, when she was spotted on the job, there were no traditional orange vests in sight! On Friday, the paparazzi captured the heiress cleaning up graffiti, while dressed in tight black pants, a yellow tee over a billowing zigzag, black and white top and high heels. The website reported that that the listed guidelines of the Hollywood Beautification Team, which the heiress was said to be working with, state that workers are supposed to dress accordingly and "prepare to get dirty." Also in the guidelines - no high-heeled shoes. Paris Hilton's Journey From 'Simple' To Superstar! Additionally, the guidelines reportedly state that those involved with the program must arrive at 7:00 AM. If they are 15 minutes late, they will not be allowed to work that day. As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, in late September, Paris pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges stemming from her August arrest at a Las Vegas hotel-casino. She was sentence to a year of probation. Additionally, Hilton was ordered to complete a drug abuse program, pay a $2000 fine and serve 200 hours of community service.

What Defines a Community?
Scholars have argued for a long time about whether online groups can be considered communities. Of course, there are many different types of online groups, some of whom consider themselves a community and some who do not. Some people attribute Internet-based interaction to breaking up local communities. But as Wellman (1996) points out, for many people in the United States, people's strongest social ties have not been local for quite some time. He argues that industrial forces have been changing the composition of our social networks over the course of the last hundred years--long before the Internet appeared on the scene. In conducting online research among video sharing site participants, I've noticed that YouTube is vast with people relating positive and negative experiences they have had on the site. But what is particularly interesting to me is that in discussing whether or not YouTube feels like a community to them, the interviews revealed what the individuals defined as the characteristics of community. To me this is an important part of the video. Many different definitions of community are mentioned in this video both in words and images. Can you identify them? The 3rd Annual EVHS Community Service day was yet again a huge success. With participation nearing 100% with over 750 Devils working around our community. Over 3500 hours of community service was given on Wednesday May, 16 2012. We are the ONLY high school in the United States that does this with the entire student body of nearly a thousand kids!
