Space Station Commander Captures Unprecedented View of Comet
International Space Station Commander Dan Burbank captured spectacular imagery of Comet Lovejoy as seen from about 240 miles above the Earth's horizon on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Today Burbank described seeing the comet two nights ago as "the most amazing thing I have ever seen in space," in an interview with WDIV-TV in Detroit. Halley's Comet - P1
Halley's Comet or Comet Halley (officially designated 1P/Halley) is the most famous of the periodic comets, and is visible from Earth every 75 to 76 years. Many comets with long orbital periods may appear brighter and more spectacular, but Halley is the only short-period comet that is clearly visible to the naked eye, and thus, the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime. During its returns to the inner solar system, it has been observed by astronomers since at least 240 BC, but it was only recognized as a periodic comet in the 18th century when its orbit was computed by English astronomer Edmond Halley, after whom it is named. Halley's Comet last appeared in the inner Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in mid-2061. During its 1986 apparition, Halley's Comet became the first to be observed in detail by spacecraft, providing the first observational data on the construction of the comet nucleus and the mechanism of tail formation. These observations supported a number of longstanding hypotheses about comet construction, particularly Fred Whipple's "dirty snowball" model, but also provided data which substantially reformed and reconfigured these ideas. Comet Elenin heads towards Earth
The ancient Mayan calendar predicts that we will be coming to an end of a cycle in the year 2012. The winter solstice is believed to be the date that the world will end. Lately there has been a lot of buzz about the comet Elenin. The comet is set to come close to earth on October 16th of this year and many believe this will have atrocious affects on the planet. Stunning video: NASA captures giant comet hitting sun
SOHO (NASA-ESA Solar & Heliospheric Observatory) watched as a fairly bright comet dove towards the Sun in a white streak and was not seen again after its close encounter (May 10-11, 2011). The comet, probably part of the Kreutz family of comets, was discovered by amateur astronomer Sergey Shurpakov. In this coronagraph the Sun (represented by a white circle) is blocked by the red occulting disk so that the faint structures in the Sun's corona can be discerned. Interestingly, a coronal mass ejection blasted out to the right just as the comet is approaching the Sun. Scientists, however, have yet to find a convincing physical connection between sun-grazing comets and coronal mass ejections. In fact, analysis of this CME using images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory shows that the CME erupted before the comet came close enough to the solar surface to interact with strong magnetic fields.

A new comet has appeared out of the darkness of space... and its fairly large in comparison to other smaller previous objects which burned up as they approached the sun... this may be like comet Lovejoy (from this past december 2011) .. if it survives its close encounter --- it will emerge from around the back side of the sun.. heading out in a new --- yet unknown --- direction. NASA/ESA SOHO & NASA SDO Comet Meets Sun, October 1, 2011
A comet discovered on Friday September 30, 2011 by an amateur astronomer disintegrated on Saturday October 1, 2011 when it plunged into the Sun. The Corongraph of NASA/ESA's SOHO captured the last few hours of the comet. Very shortly after the comet dove into the Sun a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) exploded. As of current solar scientists do not believe that a comet can trigger a Coronal Mass Ejection - however, the question of if a comet could cause a magnetic instability on the Sun remains and is being studied. On July 6, 2011 the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) observed a sungrazing comet and it appeared to interact with the plasma and magnetic field as it fell apart. The first two segments in this video are from October 1, 2011 and were observed by NASA/ESA's SOHO spacecraft. The last two segments were captured by NASA's SDO on July 5, 2011. Comet Elenin pictures September 2, 2011 See Comet Elenin's Nucleus Intact
These images were taken yesterday. All were taken on the same telescope. The reason the comet looks different in each one or the same is because of the filter used to see Comet Elenin C/2010 X1. Luminance filters return a lot of the visible light but they also take in a lot of ambient light from the atmosphere. That's why those filters are best for very dark skies. The skies around Comet Elenin are anything but dark. The Ha (Hydrogen alpha( filter produced a wonderful image of what I believe to be Comet Elenin's Nucleus or at least the light visible using the Ha filter was return in a compact and tight return. It looks like the nucleus to me. When added together with the SII filter, which looks like a baseball, I have no other choice but to believe the nucleus is intact. The "I" filter produced the ice cream cone top. The return was rounded to the north of the image and scalloped to the south. I found each image to be unique. I wish I could get them stacked in a way that brought out the comet with all the parts together. I will be working on that over the next week. Last night I was unable to image the comet. Francis

Any debate as to whether comet LoveJoy is one or two pieces is now settled by the most recent frames of the SECCHI B - HI1 camera footage. The feed that was "missing" earlier today (which actually ended up being available for download in PICTURE form only for half the day today) === HAS NOW BEEN RESTORED ! here is the same link same everything I provided earlier : search the date 20111219 through most current today. By September, it will drop lower in the west but remain visible in the evening sky until year's end for observers at mid-northern latitudes. Comet Garradd will peak in brightness late next February at around 6th magnitude, so it could be visible with the naked eye if you have really dark skies. Closest approach to Earth happens next March 5, when Garradd will be 117.7 million miles away. update 12/25/2011 325pm CST: I removed the 2nd lovejoy video.. here are the facts.. the feed was changed to be every 2 hours some time today.. the feed earlier today was every 40 minutes.. the IMAGES from every 40 minutes are available still .. the video is gone. Why? I don't know yet. but the images are still available , just not the video. You can find the images by searching for "images" on the left hand side.. its fairly complex to navigate but they are still there for the time being. In otherwords.. it is a case of omission of data as opposed to censorship of data -- you can make you "own movie" by downloading all the pics and streaming them together in a slideshow on your own movie maker. The comet and the coronal mass ejection
On October 1, 2011, a comet screamed into the Sun and presumably disintegrated. A few minutes later, the Sun erupted in a big blast of magnetic energy called a Coronal Mass Ejection. Are the two related? I show three satellite views of the comet and CME from three different angles, and describe the events. My conclusion: it's almost certainly coincidence.
