Colombia, officially the Republic of Colombia, is a constitutional republic in northwestern South America. Colombia is bordered to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; to the north by the Caribbean Sea; to the northwest by Panama; and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. Colombia also shares maritime borders with Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. With a population of over 45 million people, Colombia has the 29th largest population in the world and the second largest in South America, after Brazil. Colombia has the third largest Spanish-speaking population in the world after Mexico and Spain. The territory of what is now Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous nations including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tairona. The Spanish arrived in 1499 and initiated a period of conquest and colonization killing or taking as slaves almost 90% of that native population, and then creating the Viceroyalty of New Granada (comprising modern-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, the northwest region of Brazil and Panama) with its capital in Bogotá.Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 "Gran Colombia" had collapsed with the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador. But that image has been shattered after 12 Secret Service agents in Cartagena, Colombia to protect President Barack Obama were allegedly caught using prostitutes. They were allegedly discovered after hotel staff found a hooker in one of their rooms. She refused to leave before being paid. The 12 agents were relieved of their duty. Five soldiers at the same hotel are also in hot water and have been confined to their rooms after breaking curfew. President Obama was informed of the ordeal and ordered a probe, but the hooker ordeal completely overshadowed Obama's mission to woo Latin American leaders. Colombian coca farmers turn to gold-mining
Cocaine farmers in Colombia are leaving the drug business and moving into illegal gold-mining. Authorities have shut down scores of mines in the northwestern province of Cordoba in a crackdown on illegal mining that started in September. About 400 police took part in the sweep. Communities near the unregulated mines suffer from the "improper use of mercury and other contaminating substances" found in soil and bodies of water, officials said. Al Jazeera's Monica Villamizar reports from Norosi.

Colombian Prostitute Dania Suarez breaks her silence about Secret Service scandal
One of the Colombian escorts embattled in the Secret Service scandal in Cartagena broke her silence today and spilled some sordid details of the night several of President Obama's men became embroiled with scandal. Dania Suarez, 24, spoke in an exclusive interview to W Radio in Colombia, and told listeners in Spanish that one of the agents, identified as Arthur Huntington, was 'heavily intoxicated.' Huntington has since left the Secret Service. The young single mother appeared in the studio looking tan, with her long, dark hair tumbling down her back. While she denies being a 'prostitute,' she said she requested 'a little present' of $800.

Palm oil is a valuable commodity. It's cheaper than other plant-based oils, and the palm fruit is both productive and versatile. Palm oil can be found almost anywhere, from vegetable produce to cosmetics and biodiesel. But the palm boom has a major disadvantage - entire rainforests are often razed and depleted in order to create palm tree plantations. And palm oil production is growing at a rapid rate, with estimates of 100 million tons a year by 2025. That trend is no different in Colombia, where the precious plant is booming. But there, farmers have found a sustainable method of production. A family business called Daabon Group cultivates palm plants on unused land, and they capture the methane generated during the production to be converted into energy. Many local farmers even ship their palm fruits to the Daabon business, providing a further source of income.

Former FARC rebels and paramilitaries who put down their weapons have found an unlikely way to reinsert themselves into Colombian life by producing their own fashion line. With the help of a government agency designed to ease ex-rebels back into society, Alvaro Perez a former FARC member and four other former guerrillas started up a clothing line called Chance. Perez said he came out of the FARC camps with a special skill after making uniforms, adding that the freedom to choose clothing is a perk. Other members of the group also have skills that lend themselves to the clothing line. Fault Lines - Colombia's gold rush
Gold fever is sweeping across South America. Nowhere is it more lethal than in Colombia, where the gold rush has become a new axle in Colombia's civil war. Turf wars are erupting between paramilitaries, and leftist rebel groups fighting to take control of mining regions. It's fueling an old ideological conflict and has displacing hundreds of people. Helicopter raids by the Colombian Army on small community mining collectives have become commonplace, and the Colombian government is accused of targeting poor workers to protect big business interests, and operating with impunity from human rights violations. Thousands have fled their homes where land is violently contested, and others live in fear they'll be removed from their land, arrested, or killed. The multinationals are flooding in too. With gold now worth around $1500 an ounce, everyone is getting in on the act, including North American mining companies. Colombia's pro-business mentality has seen arbitrary concessions by the state sold to multinational companies, often on indigenous land. Fault Lines traveled to Colombia to speak to the people caught in the middle. A look inside the La Modelo prison in Bogota. Colombia. Called a "model" prison by Colombian officials the prison in reality is controlled more by the prisoners, than the guards. With 5000 prisoners for 2400 spots, and not more than 150 security guards assigned to the prison. The prison is awash in violence, and drugs. Last year, 162 prisoners were killed there. The prison is controlled by three criminal groups: members of the guerrilla movement, paramilitary forces, and cocaine traffickers. They have broken the prison up into three different territories and each group has it's own security forces, defending it's own territory.
Colombia pushes FARC to disarm
In the week since the killing of Alfonso Cano, head of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Colombian authorities continue to push for the disarming of Latin America's oldest armed group. Cano's death is a major coup for Colombia, but FARC remains active in 60 areas of the country with, anywhere between 8000 and 10000 fighters remaining. Before his death, Cano had managed to win consensus among FARC leaders to pursue peace talks with the government, but with his death, many residents of areas most affected by the ongoing conflict fear chances for peace have been greatly diminished, if not, halted entirely. A violent shanty town in Colombia is the site of an unusual experiment in urban planning. The soon-to-be-inaugurated public escalators in Medellin are aiming to transform lives in a high-risk, low-income neighbourhood. Urban planners hope the stairs will not only spare the residents a 400m tiring climb, but also help to break the vicious cycle of social exclusion and physical isolation that plague the area, by offering the residents a safe alternative. Colombia's FARC rebels kill four hostages
A Colombian soldier who was held captive for 11 years by rebels has been found alive - after a gun battle between Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels and the military. The FARC killed four other soldiers they had been holding hostage on Saturday. It is the FARC's first major attack since its former leader, Alfonso Cano, was killed by government forces earlier this month. Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports.
Tackling Urban Risk: Colombia

Cali, Colombia The Programme for Prevention and Support for Street Children and Youth, PANICA, aims to reduce the vulnerability of children and youth who live or spend considerable amount of their time in the street; or who suffer from urban school and juvenile violence. The overall aim is to improve quality of life and living conditions of the beneficiary population, including the parents and families of targeted children and youth. PANICA is supported by the Norwegian Red Cross and implemented in various Colombian cities. It was started in 2004 in the Navarro rubbish area on the outskirts of Cali and advanced in 2009 to the El Calvario neighbourhood in the city centre, where high levels of child and youth vulnerability exist. 691 persons in Cali, between the ages of five and 80, are benefitting from protective factors developed at individual, family and community levels, and by support for health growth and development. 40% of the 691 persons linked to the project in Cali since 2009, have experienced significant changes in behaviour, in the nature of parent-child relations, in the roles played in the family and in the reduction of intra-family violence. The project has enable improved awareness and understanding of the marginalized people of Cali; their needs, the stigma they face and the social context in neighbourhoods historically feared by Cali society due to their levels of violence, homicide, drug trading, waste recycling and prostitution.
