Cold War Video

This is a Video that I made with my friend for AP European History. It's about the cold war and this is for the Finishing the Story Project.

Pretty Much The Cold War

This was a project I did because I was inspired by the humor in the Cold War. I did this in 3 days, but it took a total of about 25 hours. The end is pretty weak in that it doesn't cover much of how the cold war ended or how Russia fell, but it does cover most of the funny stuff. With the sucess in this video I plan on making more like it. I hope you enjoy it. 1/10/2011 - I, Pyrozz, am stating the license of "Pretty Much the Cold War" to be free of use and part of the Public Domain.

The Cold War Game: The USSR

After Renny Bartlett made the Cold War Game the USA for Triple Vision and Channel 4, Ch4 decided that to balance the books there should be a programme on the USSR - which is what this documentary is - I directed this project and we made Pick of the Day in every national newspaper at the time (1988) so I must have done something right ! The idea was that as Soviet history in the west had been characterised by the use of drama as documentary (Eisenstein's footage for instance) that we should re-tell that history in that form but make a twist at the end to show how that characterisation was a wrong one....

THE COLD WAR - PART 9: Detente

Cold War Bunker

July 1996 - Beneath the sun loungers and the shaven lawns of the USA's grandest hotel lies a cold war bunker. Since 1958, the opulence of Greenbriar hotel, West Virginia, has concealed an underground shelter built to protect the US government, staff and families from a nuclear war. A 25 tonne blast door swings open to reveal a dormitory of steel bunk beds, a sterilised hospital, an industrial kitchen and a cafeteria complete with 1960s vinyl chairs. Frozen in time, long dark corridors lead to the House of Representatives Chamber adorned with a full size American flag and a wooden lectern. Outside, a transmission tower, encased in a metal strongbox, allowed the Senate Leader to address a war ravaged America in its hour of need. For 30 years, Fritz Bugas - Project Manager for this top secret operation - was able to maintain the bunker by posing as an electronic consultant for the Greenbriar hotel. His cover was blown by the Washington Post in 1992 and the bunker was decommissioned last year. Now a tourist attraction, it stands as an eerie reminder of 'Doomsday' paranoia during the Cold War years. ( ABC Australia

Cold War Computing - The SAGE System

The SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) System, was designed and built in the 1950s to defend against the threat of Soviet bombers attacking the continental United States. The system was much influenced by the design of MIT's Whirlwind II computer system (which was never completed). IBM designed and built the AN/FSQ-7 computer, the heart of the SAGE program, with companies such as Western Electric (who produced In Your Defense), The Mitre Corporation and System Development Corporation were also major contractors on the project. There were more than twenty SAGE installations located across North America linking hundreds of radar stations, Air Force fighter wings, and missle defense sites in the first large-scale computer communications network. The SAGE network was decentralized and would allow a unit to continue operation even if other sites were disabled. As the Soviet attack threat shifted from long-range bombers to nuclear missles in the 1960's, the SAGE system became less strategic. However, parts of the system continued operation into the early 1980's. This film explains the national security threats of the 1950's and 60's that SAGE was built to defend against, shows the SAGE computer and network in operation and simulates how SAGE would react to an attack on the United States.

Arctic Cold War - Canada

Sep 2007 As the scramble for Arctic resources intensifies, Canada is stepping up its military presence in the region. It's determined to protect its national sovereignty. "We will not compromise the defence of Canadian territory", vows Prime Minster Stephen Harper, announcing plans for more polar patrol ships. As the Arctic warms up; "major corporations are waking up to the fact there is going to be tremendous economic opportunity", explains Prof Huebert. Canada, Russia, Denmark and Norway all have claims to the Arctic seabed, where vast mineral reserves are thought to lie. There's concern that this scramble for resources could spiral out of control. "The worst case scenario is one of a regional area where hostilities are the norm and co-operation the exception", warns Huebert. The other main dispute is the legal status of the North West passage, which could dramatically shorten shipping times between Europe and Asia. "Canada considers all of the waters within the Canadian arctic archipelago to be internal waters", explains Prof Donat Pharand. But other countries see the passage as an international strait. "This is a dispute between Canada and the world", claims US Ambassador David Wilkins. A summit is planned for next year to discuss the future of the region. Russia's Cold War on the Arctic

Complete video at: fora.tv In 2007, Russian explorers staked their nation's claim to the arctic region by placing a Russian flag on a seabed at the North Pole. A panel of military experts discusses the act's implications for the international community. ----- In 2007, Russia laid claim to parts of the Arctic seabed—a historic first and an act that has been challenged by Canada, the United States, and Norway. These littoral states as well as Denmark, Finland, and non-littorals such as China and Japan, have looked at the Arctic as an area for possible new transit routes, energy supplies, and fishing grounds. Growing fossil fuel needs and depleted national fisheries are forcing countries to look for new areas of resource wealth. While many are looking at the Arctic as an area of opportunity (a "frozen Saudi Arabia" as some have dubbed it), the littorals are concerned about the national security implications of a navigable sea lane or "Northwest Passage" through the Arctic and northern Canada connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. Increased military and commercial shipping traffic, environmental damage, smuggling, and trafficking, and therefore increased national expenditures of resources for monitoring and possibly reacting to such activities in the Arctic all come into play. Arctic security has been debated more and more in recent years. NATO, numerous governments, and nonprofit organizations have held discussions on the range of issues relating to the changing ...

CIA Archives: True Stories - Cold War Espionage - Central Intelligence Agency (1963)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Cold War espionage descibes the intelligence gathering activities during the Cold War between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. Because each side was preparing to fight the other, intelligence on the opposing side's intentions, military, and technology was of paramount importance. To gather this information, the two relied on a wide variety of military and civilian agencies. While several such as the CIA and KGB became synonymous with Cold War espionage, many other organizations played key roles in the collection and analysis of a wide host of intelligence disciplines. During World War II the various allied nations held a tenuous relationship with the Soviet Union, but cooperation persisted due to a common enemy. Never quite trustful of each other, this resulted in espionage of tactics and technology between the Western bloc and Soviet bloc. After World War II ended, the two sides became increasingly confrontational, culminating in the Cold War. Intelligence Assessment is the development of forecasts of behaviour or recommended courses of action to the leadership of an organisation, based on a wide range of available information sources both overt and covert. Assessments are developed in response to requirements declared by the leadership in order to inform decision making. Assessment may be carried out on behalf of a state, military or commercial organisation with a range of available sources of information available to each. An ...

Nuclear Disaster Preparedness Special: Cold War Atomic Bomb Evacuation Film (1957)

DVD: www.amazon.com CONELRAD (Control of Electromagnetic Radiation) was a method of emergency broadcasting to the public of the United States in the event of enemy attack during the Cold War. It was intended to serve two purposes; to prevent Soviet bombers from homing in on American cities by using radio or TV stations as beacons, and to provide essential civil defense information. US President Harry S. Truman established CONELRAD in 1951. After the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles reduced the likelihood of a bomber attack, CONELRAD was replaced by the Emergency Broadcast System on August 5, 1963, which was later replaced with the Emergency Alert System in 1997; all were administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Unlike its successors, the EBS and EAS, CONELRAD was never used for nor intended to be used for severe weather warnings or local civil emergencies. Prior to 1951, there was no method that the US government could use to broadcast warnings to citizens in the event of an emergency. However, radio stations and networks could interrupt normal programming and issue a bulletin in the event of an emergency, as happened during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, as well as the first successful tornado warning near Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City in 1948. This type of broadcasting was the forerunner to CONELRAD. The CONELRAD concept was originally known as the Key Station System. According to an FCC document created ...

The Political Economy of the Cold War

Speaker: Professor Niall Ferguson Chair: Professor Arne Westad This event was recorded on 18 October 2010 in Old Theatre, Old Building At its heart the Cold War was a competition between two economic systems. Despite having in common a "military-industrial complex", they were profoundly different in the degree of freedom they offered their citizens, the living standards they were able to achieve and the pace of technological innovation they could sustain. In this first lecture, Niall Ferguson compares and contrasts the United States and the Soviet Union in the Cold War and asks how far the outcome of the Cold War was economically determined from the outset. In particular, what role did commercial and financial globalisation play in enhancing US power in the world? And how serious a threat did inflation pose to the United States in the 1970s? Professor Niall Ferguson is the Philippe Roman Chair in History and International Affairs for the 2010-2011 academic year.
