Coffee Pot - Driver: Hayden Hart, Fireman: Mark Grimshaw, Loco Inspector: Bill Bennett, The Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society is an entirely voluntary organisation dedicated to the preservation Of Australia's most ambitious operating railway museum. Railway workshops and operations are based at Quorn in South Australia's Flinders Ranges. The steam coach was built at Leeds, England, in 1905, and is the only one of its type left in the world today. It operated between Quorn and Port Augusta and Quorn and Hawker until 1928 when it was retired. It is the Society's intention to renovate this coach so that it can again operate in Pichi Richi Pass. It is extremely well built, and due to the Commonwealth Railways keeping a good coat of paint on this vehicle over the years, it is remarkably well preserved. A big vote of thanks goes to our Patron, Mr. KA Smith, for his foresight in preserving this vehicle and for making this truly unique steam motor coach available to the Society. We are sure that when it is again operational it will prove to be a big tourist draw card for us.

Coffee Pot No.1, a veteran from 1871, is seen carrying out a genuine day's work when the curatorial team at Beamish Museum were engaged in moving rolling stock into and out of the storage areas. This gave a great opportunity to see some items not normally on public display, as well as giving the curatorial team a public outing in all their dishevelled states! Here is a sequence of film taken over the day. Note that the signals are non-operational and aren't being passed at 'danger'. Brew Coffee in a Vacuum Pot
Finishing up brewing a pot of coffee using the vacuum pot method. Look for the entire process to be posted soon. This is also called a siphon coffee maker so if you hear someone talking about or read anything about "siphon" coffee makers, it's the same thing. Personally, I find the vac pot method a great way to produce a clean cup of coffee, both in taste and appearance. The taste is full but no overly so, as I've found French Press coffee to be. Also, there is very little sediment if done correctly and the beans are ground to the right size. I use a vintage Cory glass filter rod instead of a cloth or metal screen filter. As the water makes its way up the tube into the top chamber, it lifts the rod to allow water to enter. Once the water has made it to the top chamber, the rod will settle back into the tube and actually sit on top of some grinds. Once the pot is removed from heat, the vacuum produced in the lower chamber will pull the brewed coffee back through the tube, using the grinds (which are weighed down by the glass rod filter) as the filter itself. Vacuum Coffee Maker - How to brew the perfect stovetop coffee
We at www.italianbeandelight.com sell the Yama Vacuum Coffee Maker, the perfect syphon coffee stovetop brewer with a capicity of 5 or 8 cups for the perfect gourmet drip coffee. Cheaper than other vacuum coffee makers like cona, hario or bodum santos, this yama vacuum brewer brews coffee with a great body, but without the sediment you would get in a French press. It has a longlasting cloth filter that fits over the metal filter assembly and should be replaced each year. The lid doubles as a stand for the funnel (top glass part), and it comes with a spare cloth filter and a burner wire grid for use on an electric stove. The glass is labelled on the bottom as "Heat-Resistant Yama Glass". The brewer is easy to use. The rubber gasket between the top and the bottom -the flange on it makes the creation of an airtight seal (and the separation of top and bottom when the coffee is brewed) much easier. The 5 cup model is fine for 2 people. For more people you should rather prefer the 8 cup model. We compared the Yama vaccum brewer with the bodum santos vacuum brewer.
