Nationwide Coalition Opposes Express Scripts/Medco Merger
More than 50 consumers, small business owners and community pharmacists with Preserve Community Pharmacy Access NOW! (PCPAN) gathered in Washington, DC to urge Congress and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to support patient care and oppose the planned merger between Express Scripts Inc. and Medco Health Solutions Inc, two of the nation's largest pharmacy benefit management (PBM) companies. Following the press conference, which featured remarks by Representatives Joe Courtney (D-CT) and Thomas Marino (R-PA), they met with elected representatives on Capitol Hill. The coalition expressed concerns that the new mega-PBM would control much of the supply line of brand-name and generic drugs, especially in markets where the PBMs are already highly concentrated. The merger would hurt health care quality, compromise safety and limit access to community pharmacies, while driving drug prices through the roof. It would also result in decreased access to local community pharmacies that provide convenient and helpful services. "If allowed to go forward, this merger would have devastating effects on consumers and small businesses, alike," said Congressman Joe Courtney (D-CT). "In an industry that already offers few choices, further market concentration would squeeze out the community pharmacies many of us have come to trust the most." Malaysia's Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi appears to have been returned to power in general elections, but there have been major swings against his ruling coalition. Significantly they have come from the minority ethnic Chinese and Indian vote. The Indians had staged rare protests in Malaysia over what they say was discrimination. The result will severely dent the ruling coalition's majority in Parliament, and could change forever the dynamics of Malaysian politics.

Maines Atlantic Clarion Steel Band - Pan Coalition When one thinks of the state of Maine in the USA one thinks of shipbuilding, fishing and the sea. The steelpan instrument or a major steelband is not what one would normally associate with the USAs northernmost state. And yet inexplicably this is exactly what we have in the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band. During the recent Montreal International Steelpan Music Festival, When Steel Talks got to see and hear Atlantic Clarion Steel Band in action as part of the Pan Coalition performing side, of which Atlantic Clarion is a significant portion. The additional members hail from a couple smaller bands also located in Maine. The Atlantic Clarion Steel Band is indeed a serious music outfit. Pressured to reveal whether or not he intended to set up shop, we see Ari smartly dodging the majors' questions. They say, "We've been watching you," so Ari replies "Have you been watching me?" They say, "We know what you've been up to," so he answers "What have I been up to?" They say "Why don't you tell us?" and he replies "Why should I tell you if you already know?" Ari adroitly employs this technique to avoid revealing any information about his plans. Terrence, sitting at the head of the table, accuses Ari of being a "rat" with a "master plan." Ari sharply uses this choice of language to wedge Terrence's coalition. "I can only hope that 50 percent of the power at the table is as offended as I am!" he says, looking at his Jewish counterparts. Because people tend to be fairer with people similar to themselves, in bringing up ethnic likeness Ari establishes an 'in group' with whom he could apply the similarity principle. After Ari admits that he's setting up his only agency, we see a back-and-forth leverage battle between Terrence and Ari. By promising to steal only Terrence's clients and agents, Ari realigns his counterparts' interests and Terrence loses some leverage. The group, then, becomes an audience for the dispute between Terrence and Ari. Terrence, without the power of coalitions or normative standards, once again must resort to leveraging his deep pockets against Ari. Using the threat of fighting the settlement, he establishes negative leverage and dashes Ari's ...
