Roll Cloud at South Oliphant, Ontario - 5/27/2007
This weather phenomenon, known as a "Roll Cloud", stretched across the sky and spun in a spiral rotation on May 27, 2007. The cloud came in off of Lake Huron and passed over Chief's Point and our family's property at the southern end of Oliphant in Bruce County, Ontario. We quickly realized that this cloud was being pushed by a cold air mass as the temperature dropped from the low-70s down to the mid-50s in about 3 minutes. Chilly gusts of wind picked up as the cloud passed overhead.

Weird Cloud Shoots
I was pool side in my apartment in Singapore, when I saw something weird in the skies. As I looked over head I saw some weird cloud shoots of light and puff as the clouds seemed to reform sporadically. I could see that a storm cloud was building, but the light and visual show was intriguing me. Located near the top of the Earth's mesosphere (the region just above the stratosphere), very little is known about how these polar mesospheric clouds form or why they vary. They are being seen at lower latitudes than ever before and have been growing brighter and more frequent, leading some scientists to suggest that this recent increase may be the direct result of human-induced climate change. "The breaking waveforms of 'Kelv-Helmz' (as they aren't known) are the result of shearing winds up at cloud level. A particular type of turbulence can develop in a layer of Cirrus cloud, which happens to form below an inversion* between air currents of differing speeds and/or directions. Sea waves break as their bases are slowed down upon reaching shallow water and their crests surge ahead. Spectacular UFO Lenticular Cloud & X-Files "X" Timelapse 3-9-2010 in Santa Clarita
A few times each year in Santa Clarita, the conditions are just right for these strange clouds to form. They're sometimes called "UFO" clouds because of their rounded, saucer-like shapes and hovering behavior. They've been around as long as any other kind of clouds, and were "officially" described/catalogged in the mid 1800s - long before man could fly, HAARP or even use of electricity by humans. Much earlier records (paintings, text, etc.) no doubt exist as well. In the scientific world, they're known as Lenticular clouds (Altostratus lenticularis), or "standing wave" clouds, and generally form over, downwind of, or sometimes upwind of mountain ranges. This event occured in the afternoon and evening of March 9th, 2010 when fast-moving winds aloft were deflected upwards by the mountains near Santa Barbara (Los Pinetos National Forest), providing some spectacular skies around sunset. The cause is interesting... Fluid dynamics also apply to air, since wind moves much like water; it flows over the surface of the earth and when it encounters surface features (like mountains) it flows up and over them, like boulders in a river, generating ripples/rapids in the airstream above and downwind. Unlike water, these air currents are normally invisible, unless clouds exist to make them visible. Lenticular clouds form when moist air from lower altitude is forced up into colder, lower pressure layers of the atmosphere where it condenses at the peaks of the air rapids and waves. As the ...

Storm Clouds
This is a gustnado(short for gust front tornado) that formed in Orange City, IA on the Northwestern College campus. A gustnado is similar to a tornado in the fact that it rotates, but it's direction is horizontal rather than a vertical like an actual tornado. Update- *there has been some research done and there is a possibility that this was what is more commonly called a haboob rather than a gustnado* en.wikipedia.org
