Comparing climate change skeptics to residents in Tennessee who refused to pay a $75 fee, resulting in firemen sitting back and watching their houses burn down, Zwick rants that anyone who actively questions global warming propaganda should face the same treatment. "We know who the active denialists are -- not the people who buy the lies, mind you, but the people who create the lies. Let's start keeping track of them now, and when the famines come, let's make them pay. Let's let their houses burn. Let's swap their safe land for submerged islands. Why? Because of a controversial billboard near Chicago comparing those who believe in global warming with the Unabomber. WFLD explains. "The electronic billboard in Maywood claimed that notorious people such as Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, Charles Manson, and Fidel Castro believe in global warming — the implication being that you've got to be crazy." The billboard was up for just about 24 hours before the organization decided to take it down. A contributor for Forbes says the billboard is... "...a shameless effort to equate more than 97% of all climate scientists with the City's most famous home-grown terrorist. ... this is just the latest in a long string of embarrassing acts that Heartland has carried out in public ... " Even with the criticisms, the company is not apologizing for anything. The Chicago Tribune talked to The Heartland Institute's spokesman, who said ... Michael Mann is a professor in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, a climatologist, and the director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University. Michael is best known for his extensive background and research in the field of paleoclimatology. This work led to Michael's graph of temperature trends over the last thousand years, popularly coined as the "hockey stick graph" because of its resemblance to the sporting equipment. The graph has received acclaim and criticism since its publishing. He has received many awards and honors including, but not limited to, the Outstanding Scientific Paper Award by NOAA in 2002 and also was named one of the 50 Leading Visionaries in Science and Technology by Scientific American. Michael is also one of the founders of RealClimate.org, a highly acclaimed climate science website that was chosen in 2005 as one of the top 25 "Science and Technology" websites by Scientific American and as one of the top 15 "green" websites by Time Magazine in 2008. Tea plantations and estates in Bangladesh provide the leaves for many of the world's famous brands but growers say rising temperatures are affecting the quality of the drink. Hundreds of thousands of people depend on the tea sector but if climate change is responsible for the hotter weather being experienced now - it is just a matter of time before these plantations disappear altogether. Communicating Climate Change on the Right | 01.05.2012
Climate change presents a significant long-term risk to the UK and international environment and economy. However, some on the political right are suspicious of taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Some are hostile to the climate science. Others worry that action to protect the environment is just a cover for more radical, anti-capitalist political aims. Another strand challenges the economics behind some of the policy measures being taken, and fear they threaten economic growth unnecessarily and may even undermine green aims. This debate will consider whether there is a genuine problem with climate action on the right of politics and how those who care about the environment might be better able to persuade doubters of the need for policy intervention. In particular, it will consider: To what extent are some parts of the right suspicious about climate change? How does climate change differ from other environmental problems which may be a more comfortable fit with a right of centre philosophy? How do politicians balance the weight of scientific evidence and political philosophy in deciding positions? Can a localist, market-centred philosophy fit with an acceptance of the need for action on a global problem like climate change? How can those who care about environmental issues better communicate their concerns? What language should they use? Is appealing to other concerns like energy security or green growth the best way to build support for climate action or ...
