Pulitzer Center grantee Dan Grossman made diffuse effects of climate change comprehensible by highlighting people around the world at most urgent risk. His reporting includes stories of the people in the places where climate models predict unambiguous harmful impacts, like reduced rainfall in places where farmers already suffer from limited water. At this climate conference in Bolivia, he met indigenous people from all around the world, especially from the Americas who could suffer the most severe impacts of warming, and could also become victims of ill-conceived plans, such as palm oil plantations, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The Lost Decade: Bolivian Pablo Solon Decries Climate Deal Postponing Emissions Cuts to 2020
DemocracyNow.org - In 2010, then Ambassador Pablo Solon headed Bolivia's climate negotiating team for the UN Climate Change Conference in Cancún, Mexico. However, for this year's climate summit he joined climate justice activists outside the official conference in the streets of Durban demanding the United States, and other historically large greenhouse gas emitters, agree to legally binding emissions cuts. "Developed countries -- like the US, Europe, Japan, Russia -- are just trying to avoid their responsibility when it comes to greenhouse emissions cuts. So that is the real outcome out of Durban, and that is why there is so much concern around the world because especially the developing countries -- the poor nations and the poor people around the world, even in the United States -- are going to be those ones that are going to suffer the consequences of this. That is why we call it a climate apartheid," Solon tells Democracy Now! Dec. 12. WORLDMAGNUM: EVO MORALES - BOLIVIA CLIMATE CHANGE UN (UNTV).mpg
WORLDMAGNUM: 07 May 2010 - UNTV: United Nations, New York - Bolivian President Evo Morales Ayma, today (7 May) presented the findings of the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth which recently took place in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Morales, together with indigenous, social and environmental leaders, briefed reporters and pushed for a planetary bill of rights based on the findings of the conference. He said that the best way to defend human rights is by defending the rights of Mother Earth and pressed developed countries to honor their climate debt by decolonizing the atmosphere. The Bolivian President said that voluntary cuts in Copenhagen Accord signed last year are inadequate and will not stem global warning. He accused developed nations of wanting to eliminate the commitments made in the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which he insisted must be implemented. He concluded by saying that the world is facing the option of two paths; to save capitalism, or to save Mother Earth. Morales presented Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon with the conferences declaration known as the Peoples Agreement. The declaration warns that if global warming increases by more than 2 degrees Celsius, there is a 50% probability that the damages caused to our Mother Earth will be completely irreversible. ..... Climatologists Predict Catastrophic Drought for Bolivia
According to a new study by climatologists, Bolivia will be overwhelmed by a catastrophic drought within fifty years. They say Lake Titicaca which sustains the capital La Paz, is drying up at an alarming pace putting millions of lives at risk. Bolivia's plight will be at at the forefront of discussions at next week's climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico. For thousands of year, the waters of lake Titicaca, South America's largest lake, have sustained and nurtured millions of people. Today, however, the water is running out. Scientists say climate change has come to the lake with a particular severity. The latest study, conducted by a team led by the Florida Institute of Technology's Mark Bush, paints a bleak picture. [Mark Bush, Climatologist, Florida Institute of Technology]: "When this lake basically goes away suddenly the area there becomes a desert. And so this could happen, we think, within the next 50 years." The team investigated a 370000-year record of climate and vegetation change in Andean ecosystems. The study began in 2001 when scientists drilled into the deepest parts of the lake to retrieve fossilized pollen trapped in the sediments. Bush found that during two of the last three interglacial periods, Lake Titicaca shrank by as much as 85 percent. Adjacent grasslands were replaced by desert. The results of the study point to similar scenario. Farmer Luis Quispe Mamani say it has already started. His family has been farming the land on the shores of Lake ...

MaximsNewsNetwork: CLIMATE CHANGE UN SUMMIT
MaximsNewsNetwork: 22 September 2009 - UNTV: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presses world leaders gathered at the UN for the largest ever summit on climate change, to speed up their action on global warming and preserve the planet for future generations. With the clock ticking towards this Decembers climate change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, world leaders gathered today (22 September) at the United Nations to find ways to speed up their action on global warming and preserve the planet for future generations. Todays summit at UN Headquarters in New York is the largest ever on climate change, with more than 100 heads of State and government in attendance. The day-long event opened with the recitation of a portion of late astronomer Carl Sagans Pale Blue Dot by actor Djimon Hounsou, followed by a film both written and narrated by children from around the world. Ban, who visited the Arctic ice rim earlier this month and saw first-hand the rapid impact of climate change, countered claims that addressing global warming comes at too high a price tag and said that those who say that tackling climate change is too expensive are wrong and that the opposite is true as we will pay an unacceptable price if we do not act now. Rajendra Pachauri, who chairs the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), echoed the Secretary-Generals words saying that if world leaders do not act on time, they will become leaders of failed states as they would be ...
