René Clair - Entr'acte (1924) - Part 1/2
In his search for "pure" cinema, René Clair followed the Dadaist approaches of photomontage (as advocated by John Heartfield—a technique which involved "the meeting place of a thousand spaces"), and the random (as advocated by Tristan Tzara). True to those premises, Clair juxtaposed images and events as disparate as a chess game played by Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray, a cannon ignited by Erik Satie and Francis Picabia, a funeral where the coat of arms bearing the initials of Satie and Picabia was displayed, a ballerina, a sniper, inflatable balloon heads, the Luna Park rollercoaster, etc. These events were shot from a number of angles (including the ballerina from below through a plate of glass), and at varying speeds (from Satie and Picabia jumping toward the cannon in slow motion to the funeral procession racing off at the speed of the Keystone cops). While the images stressed the content as play, the director stressed the style as playfulness. Through his film Clair invoked the entire catalogue of available cinematic techniques, abandoned the notion of narrative causality, and in true Dadaist style, espoused the overthrow of the bourgeois norm. The audience was assaulted with a series of non-related and often provocative images—from a "legless" man rising from his wagon and running away at full tilt, to a ballerina transformed into a bearded man—within a work which stressed the pleasure of inventing new spatial and temporal relations while provoking random laughter ...

It has been a tremendously challenging journey, but it is immensely rewarding. The theremin is absolutely deceptively difficult to play with musical precision and finesse. Clara Rockmore introduced the theremin to the world as a serious musical instrument. Over the course of recent music history, this expressive voice was forgotten. This short clip presented by Isla St Clair is from a documentary filmed in August 2000, when thousands of pipers and drummers gathered in Edinburgh to raise money for Cancer Care and play bagpipes. The parade (also known as Millenium Pipes)included the Massed Pipes and Drums of the Edinburgh Tattoo, Scottish Power Pipe Band, Strathclyde Police Pipe Band as well as solo champions Roddy MacLeod and Gordon Walker. Debussy: Clair de Lune, Stanley Black, London Symphony Orchestra, (Vinyl)
Great vinyl recording of Debussy's Clair de Lune performed by the London Symphony Orchestra; arranged and conducted by Stanley Black. It is an arrangement because Mr. Black adds a few countermelodies not found in the original piano score and takes a few liberties with the expression, but overall the final result is awesome and effective. Although there are many orchestrations of this piece (among them a well-known one by Stokowski) I particularly love this arrangement because the orchestra sounds large, but the interpretation is always slow and delicate (or let's say, never too loud, always within the boundaries and the mood that the title of the piece suggests). Also listen to the emphasis on the basses, and the subtle building of emotion achieved with appropriate phrasing! Other highlights are the way the main theme comes back (at 3:45); the violins playing so incredibly soft... and then the reaching of a climax at the end of the phrase with a particularly passionate and daring emphasis on the basses (4:21).

Debussy Clair de Lune / Moonlight piano Lívia Rév (88) pianist in Szeged 2004 Livia Rév, who was born in Hungary, started her musical education with Margit Varro. It was evident from a very early age that she was exceptionally talented as she won the Grand Prix des Enfants Prodiges when she was nine. She made her debut with orchestra when she was twelve performing the Mozart E flat Concerto for two pianos. In later years she studied with Leo Weiner and Szekely at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, with Professor Robert Teichmuller at the Leipzig Conservatory, and with Paul Weingarten of the Vienna Conservatory. She also won the Grand Prix de l'Academie Franz Liszt. Sir Malcolm Sargent first brought her to the notice of the British public after a successful orchestral concert. Since that time she has been a regular visitor to the United Kingdom, and has played more or less everywhere both in recital and with orchestra. Madame Rév plays regularly all over Europe and has been the soloist with such conductors as Sir Adrian Boult, André Cluytens, Jascha Horenstein, Eugen Jochum, Josef Krips, Rafael Kubelik, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Konstantin Silvestri and Waltert Susskind.
