Noam Chomsky to RT: Bush torturer, Obama just kills

RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com Pinning its hopes on the sole support of the US, Israel risks a collapse if it is ever withdrawn - much like apartheid-era South Africa, prominent scholar Professor Noam Chomsky warns. He recalls how South Africans felt safe to ignore a UN embargo and corporations pulling out of their country throughout the 1980s, as long as the Reagan administration continued to support them. As soon as the US withdrew its support, the apartheid regime collapsed. "For 35 years, the US and Israel have been rejecting a political settlement that is supported virtually by the entire world. A couple of months ago, there was a meeting of the oligarchs -- people who pretty much run the economy [of Israel]," Chomsky says, "and they warned the government that it better accept something like this resolution, because otherwise, Israel will be, as they put it, South Africanized: even more isolated, with boycotts, refusal to load ships, and their economy will collapse."

Noam Chomsky on Ron Paul's 9/11 Theories: "What He Said Is Completely Uncontroversial"

DemocracyNow.org - During the most recent Republican presidential debate on Monday, September 12th, Congressman Ron Paul of Texas drew boos and jeers from the crowd and his fellow debaters for his views on the roots of 9/11 attacks. Dr. Paul criticized US foreign policy as the catalyst stating, "we're under great threat because we occupy so many countries... We have to be honest with ourselves. What would we do if another country, say China, did to us what we do to all those countries over there?" For more, Democracy Now! spoke with Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Noam Chomsky. Dr. Chomsky responded to Dr. Paul's comments by reciting the history of antagonism to US policy, concluding: "I think what he said is completely uncontroversial. You can read it in government documents." EXCERPT OF RUSH TRANSCRIPT: AARON MATÉ (DN! Co-Host): Well, Noam, you mentioned the changes in discourse between 10 years ago and today. And actually, this issue of the reasons behind 9/11 came up last night at the Republican presidential debate. Congress Member Ron Paul of Texas drew boos from the crowd and a rebuke from other candidates on the podium when he criticized US foreign policy in discussing the roots of 9/11. REP. RON PAUL: We're under great threat because we occupy so many countries. We're in 130 countries. We have 900 bases around the world. We're going broke. The purpose of al-Qaeda was to attack us, invite us over there, where they can ...

Was the Cold War a battle between capitalism and socialism?

Noam Chomsky: Is State Capitalism Making Life Better?

Is State-Capitalism Justified? -Noam Chomsky Answers These Questions in this interview

Noam Chomsky Attacks American "Libertarians"

Everyone's favorite subversive intellectual cuts through the right-wing BS. Both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison supported state capitalism and envisioned a country in which white men would be self-employed as farmers and craftsmen, controlling the means of their production and the fruits of their labor. They didn't want the industrial revolution that was emerging in England to spread to the US and were opposed to wage labor, and even Hamilton's plan for a national bank, but they ended up accepting all of them as necessary, especially in achieving their imperialist aims. And they worried about what would happen in the future if free land couldn't continue to be distributed to the American people, anticipating the labor violence of the 19th century. Drawing upon the actions of men living in the 18th century is not a simple matter. These men were racist, sexist and imperialist--slaveowners who opposed slavery. Jefferson was notorious during his lifetime for being self-contradictory. They were well aware that the constitution was flawed, and that writing a constitution was very different from practical governance. Madison changed his mind late in life on the issue of voting rights for poor white men, something not specifically addressed by the constitution. State goverments were used to compensate for the failings of the constitution, just as the federal government was used to compensate for the failings of state government. Jefferson warned us not to hold the ...

Noam Chomsky - Peak Oil and a Changing Climate

In this sixth video in the series "Peak Oil and a Changing Climate" from The Nation and On The Earth Productions, linguist, philosopher and political activist Noam Chomsky talks about the Chamber of Commerce, the American Petroleum Institute and other business lobbies enthusiastically carrying out campaigns "to try and convince the population that global warming is a liberal hoax." According to Chomsky, this massive public relations campaign has succeeded in leading a good portion of the population into doubting the human causes of global warming. Known for his criticism of the media, Chomsky doesn't hold back in this clip, laying blame on mainstream media outlets such as the New York Times, which will run frontpage articles on what meteorologists think about global warming. "Meteorologists are pretty faces reading scripts telling you whether it's going to rain tomorrow," Chomsky says. "What do they have to say any more than your barber?" All this is part of the media's pursuit of "fabled objectivity." Of particular concern for Chomsky is the atmosphere of anger, fear and hostility that currently reigns in America. The public's hatred of Democrats, Republicans, big business and banks and the public's distrust of scientists all lead to general disregard for the findings of "pointy-headed elitists." The 2010 elections could be interpreted as a "death knell for the species" because most of the new Republicans in Congress are global warming deniers. "If this was happening in ...

Noam Chomsky: Occupy movements' tactics extremely successful

The Occupy movement first began when a group of demonstrators gathered in New York's financial district on September 17 to protest against the unjust distribution of wealth in the country and the excessive influence of major corporations on US policies. Despite the police crackdown and mass arrests, the Occupy movement, which grew out of the Occupy Wall Street movement, has now spread to many major US cities as well as to Australia, Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, and other countries. Here is what the well-known linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky believes.

Noam Chomsky on US Economic Crisis: Joblessness, Excessive Military Spending and Healthcare

DemocracyNow.org - President Obama sent his new jobs proposal to Congress on Monday with a plan to pay for the $447 billion package by raising taxes on the wealthy. Democracy Now! interviews MIT Professor Emeritus Noam Chomsky, who says "huge military spending, a very low taxes by the rich [and corporations] ... those are problems, fundamental problems that have to be dealt with if there is going to be anything like successful economic and social development in the United States." As Republican presidential candidate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, calls Social Security a "ponzi scheme," and Democrats buy into the narrative that the program is in crisis, Chomsky notes that, "To worry about a possible problem 30 years from now, which can incidentally be fixed with a little bit of tampering here and there, as was done in 1983, to worry about that makes absolutely no sense unless you're trying to destroy the program." Noam Chomsky on Israel-Palestine Prisoner Exchange, US Assassination Campaign in Yemen

www.DemocracyNow.org - MIT Professor Emeritus Noam Chomsky, the world renewed linguist and political dissident, spoke Monday night at Barnard College in New York City about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, just hours before Israel and Hamas completed a historic prisoner exchange. Democracy Now! airs an excerpt of his address. "I think [Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit] should have been released a long time ago, but there's something missing from this whole story. There are no pictures of Palestinian women, no discussion, in fact, in the story of, what about the Palestinian prisoners being released? Where do they come from?" Chomsky says. "There is a lot to say about that. For example, we do not know -- at least I do not read it in The Times — whether the release includes the elected officials who were kidnapped and imprisoned by Israel in 2007 when the United States, the European Union, and Israel decided to dissolve the only freely elected legislature in the Arab world." Chomsky also discussed the recent US assassination of US-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen. "Almost all of the critics, of whom there were not many, criticized the action or qualified it because of the fact that al-Awlaki was an American citizen," Chomksy says. "That is, he was a person, unlike suspects who are intentionally murdered or collateral damage, meaning we treat them kind of like the ants we step on when we walk down the street — they're not American citizens. They are unpeople, therefore, they ...

Noam Chomsky - Ceasefire Interview Part 1

March 15, 2011 Noam Chomsky interviewed by Hicham Yezza of Ceasefire Magazine March 10, 2011. The questions covered with him ranged from the fairly abstract (the relevance of Gramsci) to the very urgent (Libya) but throughout, his tone, focused and urgent, conveyed his still undiminished desire to change the world for the better. A few days before, Jeremy Paxman, in a BBC interview, asked Chomsky "Why, at 82, haven't you mellowed", and Chomsky's reply, which began "Because I look at the world...", ought to make any of us take notice. The world we live in, Chomsky points out, is simply too full of injustice, of victims wronged and truths buried, for any serious person to sink into comfort and lethargy.

Noam Chomsky on Occupy Wall Street Movement & State Of World

Noam Chomsky on Occupy Wall Street Movement and world affairs Noam Chomsky interview with marina portnaya on Occupy Wall Street Movement and world affairs. "The banks are bigger and richer than before with corporate profits reaching record levels, and unemployment is about the level of the Great Depression -- I mean real unemployment." So it is time to protest, Chomsky is convinced, expressing his support for the "Occupy Wall Street" movement. "These people are saying, let's blame the culprits and the institutions behind them -- fiscal policies like taxation, rules of corporate governance, deregulation -- it does set in motion a vicious cycle that is getting worse and worse. If you walk down the streets of New York you can see very serious poverty and phenomenal wealth side by side, very much like a Third World country. Meanwhile, infrastructure is collapsing, schools are collapsing and all that keeps this cycle going."
