Chinatown (1974) Trailer
JJ 'Jake' Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is a private detective who is hired by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband Hollis, the engenier of the water department, because she thinks he's having an affair. Gittes finds out later that her client wasn't the real Mrs. Mulwray. After her husband dies at the water reservoir, Jake gets deeply involved in the case. He has a romance with the real Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) and finds out she is the daughter of Noah Cross (John Huston), one of the most powerful men in Los Angeles, who has interests in the lands near the reservoir. Chinatown won the Academy Award of Best Original Screenplay in 1975. Chinatown
In the tradition of Raymond Chandler and movies like The Big Sleep (Top 130: #24) and The Maltese Falcon (Top 130: #31), Chinatown is a near perfect movie which finds Private Investigator Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) plunged into a world of money, murder and... water. Robert Towne is the writer responsible for this, one of the best original screenplays ever written. And Roman Polanski (like Lean, in my previous post on Lawrence of Arabia) is brilliantly economic in his direction of scenes, trusting both the script and his actors. This particular scene between Gittes and Noah Cross (John Huston) is elegantly captured in one shot, avoiding the easy pitfalls of over-emphasizing the emotion of the scene. Polanski stays out of the way of the actors and keeps the camera back at a distance which brings to the surface the sheer banality of the evil communicated. It's also worth noting the composition of the scene at the 2:10 mark: the camera is behind Gittes who is framed to the left. This framing is used often and emphasizes that we only see what Gittes sees. We follow him through the convoluted web of lies and are never given information that he himself does not uncover. [Warning: major SPOILERs here. But if you haven't seen it, perhaps this will motivate you to rent or buy the DVD. But all does not go to plan. In fact, the project goes disastrously wrong, with everyone losing out. Fight on SF Muni Bus in Chinatown (annotated)
Oct 7, 2009 10am, Chinatown San Francisco. This fight occurred on the Muni Stockton route (the 9 i think) just before the stockton tunnel. As you can see, a simple argument about seat-hogging quickly turned into a full blown brawl. It's pretty clear who threw the first punch, you can see the bus' serial number, and the exact time in the video. By the way, this is the same bus where I was attacked 3 weeks ago, so I thought documenting the event was the most important thing I could do. This fight was NOT reported by the driver OR by the MUNI person who happened to be at the final stop (Stockton and Sutter). I'll be walking to work for a while. ©2009, All Rights Reserved.
