Philippines-China maritime row hurts fishermen
Tensions between China and the Philippines remain high amid a continuing stalemate over the disputed, resource-rich Scarborough Shoal. China has maritime spats with several countries, including the Philippines, in the South China Sea, believed to be rich in oil and gas and crossed by important shipping lanes, and its neighbours fear its growing naval reach in staking claim to a number of disputed areas. Situated between the Philippines and China, Scarborough Shoal has long provided a living for Filipino and Chinese fishermen. The dispute over the group of islands began on April 10 when the Philippine navy accused Chinese ships of fishing there illegally. Since the row started, China's increasing maritime presence in the area has forced many Philippine fishermen to stay at bay, severely reducing their livelihood, in fear of exacerbating tensions. Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from the west coast of the Philippines.

Blind dissident's escape tests US-China ties
A senior US diplomat arrives in China, just days before a major visit by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, amid allegations that the US is harbouring an escaped Chinese rights activist. Kurt Campbell, the assistant US secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, was seen leaving a US embassy car early on Sunday morning, and would not say why he was in the country on an unscheduled trip. China has started its first deep water oil drilling operation near a highly disputed area of the South China Sea. According to foreign media reports, after Chongqing city secretary Bo Xilai was removed from office, the number of immigration applications in China drastically increased. Immigration lawyers analyzed that this wave of immigration has to do with the unstable political environment in China. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), there are increasing numbers of Chinese seeking to immigrate to the US, Britain, Canada and other countries in recent years. Recently, this development has increased sizably. Hong Kong immigration lawyer Jean─Francois Harvey stated that there is currently an upsurge of Chinese immigrating out of China. Harvey said the mentality of these people is, "Let me out of the country right now." The WSJ report pointed out that, these people are mainly officials and businessmen. The mainland regime continues to criticize the Philippines and is increasing military build-up in the area. Recently, the regime also started to apply strict inspection of fruits imported from the Philippines. Many suggest that the Chinese regime is trying to force Philippines to back away through economic pressure. Recently, mainland China's state Administration of Quality Supervision posted a notice to its website, saying that they had detected harmful substances in fruits imported from the Philippines and requested that local Quality Supervision agencies strengthen inspection of fruits from the Philippines. The notice was announced on May 2, and posted to the website on May 8. This is the second time that China has requested strengthening the inspection of fruits from the Philippines in the recent period. 'US intervention in Iran will drag China & Russia into war'
Iran is accusing the EU of waging an economic war. It's in response to Europe considering banning Iranian oil imports in the coming weeks. Chinese warships dock in Hong Kong
Two of China's most advanced warships have docked in Hong Kong, in what some see as a deliberate display of China's naval strength. This comes amid a statemement by the Chinese naval commander that the recent joint US-Philippine drill in the South China Sea did not "target" any particular country. The warships in the 10th Chinese Naval Escort Taskforce - the Yuncheng 571 frigate and Haikou 171 destroyer - arrived in Hong Kong's Stonecutters army base on Monday for a five-day visit. The report says China's military spending in 2011 might reach USD 180 billion, a figure much higher than the officially released figure. Chinese actors are the world's most active and persistent perpetrators of economic espionage. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime also launched cyber attacks to gather intelligence, according to the Pentagon report. The CCP official data release this March show that China's 2012 military budget will reach 670 billion RMB (USD 106 billion), an11.2% increase over 2011. Over the past 20 years, nearly each year has seen a double-digit boost on its military budget. Using 2011 prices and exchange rates, the US Defense Department's estimates China's total military-related spending for 2011 ranges between $120 billion and $180 billion," said the report.
