This documentary has also been published here: topdocumentaryfilms.com Checkpoint (original title: Machssomim) is a 2003 documentary film by Israeli filmmaker Yoav Shamir, showing the everyday interaction between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian civilians at several of the regions Israel Defence Forces checkpoints. The film won five awards at various film festivals, including Best International Documentary at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Dozens of checkpoints lie scattered throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip, manned by the Israeli Defence Forces. Thousands of Palestinians pass through them every day, making them one of the major meeting points between both sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Many different encounters occur at these checkpoints each and every day, revealing a reality with its own rules and regulations, a reality that has a destructive impact on both societies. Filmed over two years, 'Checkpoint' depicts the harsh and banal routine of these crossing points and documents the day-to-day situations that form a microcosm of the situation. The cameras film in a pure and non-manipulative manner so that the viewer feels part of the experience of 'checkpoint culture'. Tension in Lebanon over checkpoint deaths
Two members of a group opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have been shot dead by soldiers at a checkpoint in Lebanon. The killings set off protests in Beirut and the northern Akkar region. Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahid, a Sunni Muslim cleric, and Muhammed Hussein Miraib, his bodyguard, were both members of the March 14 alliance. Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports from northern Lebanon.

On Saturday, September 4th, 2010 Keene New Hampshire liberty activists respond to a state and local police "sobriety" checkpoint where police check drivers license, registration, tags, and do a plain sight search of the vehicle to ensure the driver is sober. Berlin - Checkpoint Charlie
'Checkpoint Charlie' was the colloquial name for a crossing point between the former East and West Berlin (Russian and American sectors of the divided city). Although it first came into being in 1945, after the 1961 erection of the wall it became one of the few crossing points between the two sections of the divided city. It was restricted to military officers and non Germans only. Germans had to use other crossing points. Its official title was Grenzübergang Friedrichstrasse. It was located at the southern part of Friedrichstrasse - near to Kochstrasse U-Bahn station in West Berlin, with Stadtmitte being the nearest open U-Bahn station in East Berlin. Nowadays very little remains of this crossing point - the wall, watch towers, wooden shed used by the US military... these were all removed after German reunification in October 1990. For tourists there is now a replica of the original US military checkpoint shed and large photographs of US and Soviet Russian solders stand guard admitting people to their own sectors. The former wall is now delineated on the ground by a double row of cobblestones. (As seen at the end of this film). This film shows video footage taken in April 1990 plus still image photographs taken in December 1989 and July 2005. There is footage on both sides of the wall, although for reasons of personal security the footage of the Eastern side of the crossing point is somewhat minimal. Nevertheless it is possible to see the arrangement of frosted glass ...

Atara/Birzeit checkpoint
The Israeli Ministry of Defense announced that the Atara/Birzeit checkpoint was removed, but in actuality the checkpoint still operates occasionally. On Jul 12 2009 a minibus loaded with passengers arrived at the checkpoint at 3:15 PM, the passengers were allowed to continue on their way only five hours later, during which they suffered a long series of maltreatments by the soldiers.
