Her name on the program read Maria Istomina, a name chosen for her by the formidable Colonel himself... a name he thought more suitable for a native born Texan. After the company's season ended in London, Cyd returned to Los Angeles where MGM was conducting a search for a ballerina for the film, "The Ziegfeld Follies". She got the part and was signed to a long term contract and became one of the Industry's brightest dancing stars. Sizzling on the dance floor, Cyd Charisse and Ricardo Montalban are one of Hollywood's beautiful pairings. We hear of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth and Fred, Cyd and Gene Kelly, etc but no pairing was as vibrant and beautiful as these two. The movies they made together were Fiesta, On an Island With You, Mark of the Renegade, The Kissing Bandit, and Sombrero. They danced together in all but the latter. The movies are not masterpieces, last of all The Kissing Bandit but are remembered for their dance numbers. They are the latin dance dream team. Music for this video includes two songs by Ritchie Valens (who passed away on the flight as Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper) who sang We Belong Together and the very popular, La Bamba. In fact, Cyd and Ricardo danced to a more original Mexican version in Fiesta. Also included are Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These) by Eurythmics and Al di la by Jerry Vale. Of Course, the last is an Italian song but in this version is with English lyrics. The Italian version sung by Emilio Pericoli was the number #1 hit in Mexico in 1962. Ironic, since all five movies with Cyd and Ricardo, the two protrayed a latin couple. Ricardo himself was born in Mexico of Spanish parents. Cyd was often protrayed as an exotic native in her films. Also making a cameo in this video are Esther Williams (who also starred in two of the movies, Fiesta and On an Island With You) and Ann Miller.
