Winner of Amnesty International's media award 2011 Time Out (5*): "Tonight's gruelling film, anchored by Jon Snow, displays C4 journalism at its bold, devastating best" A special investigation by Channel 4 featuring devastating new evidence of alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka is screened at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, as pressure mounts for action. The documentary is an hour-long investigation into the final weeks of the bloody Sri Lankan civil war and features damning new evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Titled Sri Lanka's Killing Fields, Jon Snow presents the investigation which was shown to the United Nations Human Rights Council on Friday. Disturbing footage in the film includes the apparent extra-judicial massacre of prisoners by government forces, the aftermath of targeted shelling of civilian hospitals and the bodies of female Tamil fighters who appear to have been sexually assaulted. Also examined in the film are atrocities carried out by the Tamil Tigers. It featured devastating video evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity captured on mobile phones by both victims and perpetrators - some of the most horrific footage Channel 4 has ever broadcast. This footage featured atrocities committed on both sides but its most disturbing finding was of a series of war crimes perpetrated by victorious Sri Lankan government forces including evidence of sexual assaults on female fighters, the execution of bound prisoners and the shelling of civilians in what were supposed to be safe 'No Fire Zones'. After extensive investigations Channel 4 News can reveal that one of the victims was a high profile member of the Tamil Tigers press and communications wing. Shoba - whose nom de guerre was Isaipriya - was aged 27 when she died, and was identified by a friend speaking on condition of anonymity. The distressing execution video footage, screened by Channel 4 News last week and originating in Sri Lanka, shows a number of incidents of soldiers in uniform shooting in the head people who appear to be unarmed -- described as "cold-blooded killing" by an international expert. The video also shows the bodies of other men and women lying on the ground. Leading war crimes lawyer Julian Knowles, from Matrix Chambers, told Channel 4 News the video was "astonishing evidence" of a type he had only seen "a handful of times" showing the mass killing of civilians or unarmed combatants, a serious war crime.

Channel 4 Tamil Tiger killings in Sri Lanka

Over 10000 British Tamils, Parliamentarians and well-wishers gathered at Parliament Square on Tuesday 18 May 2010 between 4pm to 8pm to observe remembrance for the tragic loss of nearly 40000 Tamil lives lost during the Tamil Tigers Terrorist activities in Sri Lanka for last 30 years. In bleak contrast to the 72-day parliament protests last year, this gathering was far more sombre, recalling the atrocities that could not be averted by the international community and reflection on the sufferings of their kith and kin in under LTTE in Sri Lanka. Gathered with their loved ones, young and old, the crowds adorned in black, paid their respects by laying flowers on a mock tomb below the statue of Sir Winston Churchill. The memorial event was well attended by UK cross-party MPs, councillors and community representatives.
