Giza's Cave Underworld Rediscovered
Beneath the Pyramids of Giza lies a natural cave system lost for nearly 200 years. It was rediscovered on March 3rd, 2008, by a team headed by writer and explorer Andrew Collins, working with Egyptological researcher Nigel Skinner-Simpson and British engineer Rodney Hale. The cave system is natural and was last known to have been explored to any depth by British explorer and diplomat Henry Salt and Italian explorer Giovanni Caviglia in 1817. They never published any details of their discoveries. It is now believed that the caves might follow the course of local faulting, and head in the direction of the Second Pyramid, the site of the legendary Tomb of Hermes. So far, more than 20 kilometres of galleries have been found, of which barely a fraction are open to the public. All the same, a visit here still takes up much of a morning or an afternoon, as you make your way through the most spectacular parts of the cave, at first by a dinky little narrow-gauge train, and then on foot. Formed over millions of years by the Pivka river, the cave was discovered in the 17th century, though never properly explored until the early 1800s. They opened as a tourist attraction in 1819, with Franz I, Emperor of Austria, among the first to visit. Bizarrely, so popular did the caves become that electric lights were fitted in 1884 some years before such technology was first deployed in Ljubljana itself. Highlights of the cave include the enormous stalactites and stalagmites, and the quite sensational concert hall, which can (and does) hold 10000 people. The acoustics down here are said to be sensational. Note that the temperature of the cave is a chilly 10 degrees Centigrade, so bring a jumper. You may want to turn on the lights and find a comforting stuffed animal before watching this. Here's more: SCRIPT: Xibalba - the place of fear - believed by Mayans, long ago, to be the entrance to the underworld, ruled by the spirits of disease and death. Mexican archeologists have discovered a maze of stone temples in underwater caverns - a new candidate for the home of the Xibalba myth. At this site in the Yucatan peninsula, there are the ruins of eleven temples, many dry chambers linked by a 100-metre underground road which contain what may be human bones - possibly the remains of sacrifices. For the Mexican researchers, it's an exciting find: [Guillermo de Anda, Archeologist]: "As in all Mayan caves, this one contains archeological material that can provide us with a lot of information about Cenote culture and the caves in general. This place is an important place because we have found two very elaborate temples built here inside the cave which are very difficult to get to." The Mayans built soaring pyramids and elaborate palaces in Central America and southern Mexico before mysteriously abandoning their cities around 900 AD

Located 10 km from the Gateway of India at Mumbai, the entire cave temple complex covers an area of about 60000 sq ft and consists of a main chamber and two lateral ones, courtyards and several subsidiary shrines. The caves are hewed from solid rock. Cave 1 represents the evolved Brahmanical rock-cut architecture. The caves are thought to date back to the Silhara kings of the 9th through 13th centuries.

KIEV MONASTERY OF THE CAVES Ukraine
Kievo Pecherska Lavra is one of the oldest, most important and largest monastery complexes of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Holy Gate of the Trinity-Gate-Church is the main entrance into Kiev's cave monastery. It features Ukrainian Baroque architecture with stucco work and numerous icons. Gate churches were typical of Kiev Rus' and also served as watchtowers for fortified walls. Later, great artists were employed to add further embellishments. However, the history of the monastery began quite modestly. Revered monk, Antonius, lived for many years in a monastery on the Holy Mountain of Athos in Greece. He subsequently returned to his home country and lived as a hermit for the rest of his life within a cave on the banks of the River Dnjepr. Further monks followed and a community of hermits was formed that lived under monastic rule and they lived in caves until construction of the eventual monastery. The monks dug corridors and niches in the soft limestone and created a subterranean system of cave churches and cells. Some of the monks have been mummified. That is why during the Middle Ages the caves were said to be a wonder of the world and the mummies were thought to possess special healing powers. During the 1000 Year Festival of the Christianisation of Russia in 1988, the monastery once again became a place of pilgrimage for its Orthodox faithful.
