How to Build Your Career in IT
www.modis.com The best technology jobs are never jobs that get posted publicly. You might hear about them through a friend or someone you meet at a networking event, but you aren't likely to find them posted on a job board. So how do you build a career in IT when the best stuff is hiding in plain sight? You need to have a passion for technology. There are many paths to a career in IT, including formal education and personal training programs, but no matter how skilled you are, the best jobs are found through relationships. But should you specialize or go for that more well-rounded approach? Can you learn once and expect to carry yourself through to retirement? How does your personal brand impact your ability to have a career in IT? Can what you say on YouTube today impact your ability to get a job in IT tomorrow? Bobby Knight, SVP at Modis, provides perspective on how to build a great career in IT.
Careers
Produced by Nancy Christy Heinen for Pathways to Independence. Becky recalls her guidance counselor advising her to look into secretarial jobs, "So I could sit behind a desk all day," assuming that was all she was capable of. David recounts how he bristled when people told him to be "reasonable" in his expectation s for the future. Melvin remembers sitting in a chicago hospital with other kids who were victims of gang violence, realizing that if he wanted to be taken seriously, he'd have to earn it-- but how? Low expectations throw up barriers for a woman with muscular dystrophy, a man with cerebral palsy, a black man with paraplegia. Studies show that students with disabilities are filtered from exposure to opportunities for higher education and vocational training. And yet, these and two other individuals featured in "Careers" demonstrate how higher education is the key for an individual with a disability to break through the barricades that traditionally block disabled professionals from entering the career world. The video illustrates that a wheelchair-- or any other disability-- does not prevent a person from pursuing higher education and a future more rewarding than simply performing a job. We hope it will inspire, and educate, those with crucial influence on young people with disabilities, and that it will spark the imaginations and aspirations of students to the real world possibilities that can-- and should-- open the door to finding a path to a career. Coaching Series: Create the Career You Want: A Non-Hyped App
Google Tech Talks January, 31 2008 ABSTRACT Professional satisfaction is a question of creating what you want, not just waiting for it to appear. This tech talk, by one of the country's leading career coaches, shows how the process works. From my recent book: "The process of creating a life that works for you does not unfold logically. It proceeds in fits and starts, involves unlearning as much as learning, and requires you to push forward amidst ambiguity. You have to act before you're ready to act, consider that your true interests and preferences might surprise you, and defer evaluation until you have collected a lot of evidence. You have to get out into the world, seek out new experiences and connect with new people. I try to stick to these principles not because they¹re always easy, but because I¹ve learned they work." This tech talk will be an (entertaining and dynamic) introduction to the basic career- and life-planning principles that underlie this perspective. Speaker: Michael Melcher Michael Melcher is one of the country's leading career coaches, and is a partner at Next Step Partners, a leadership development and executive coaching firm. With a blend of humor, sensitivity and professional acumen, he has helped hundreds of individuals develop their careers into personal platforms that are professionally fulfilling and personally meaningful. He is a graduate of Harvard College, Stanford Law School, and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He worked for ...
