Family Rescued by Navy Construction Crew From Car Dangling Off Freeway Bridge

A Navy construction crew passing by the scene of a horrific wreck joined forces with emergency rescue workers to keep a mangled BMW carrying a California mother, her 10-year-old daughter and 10-week baby from slipping off a bridge and plunging into a 100-foot deep ravine. The vehicle dangled off the bridge Thursday after being rear-ended by a tractor-trailer, which broke through the concrete barriers and fell into the creek bed. The truck driver was killed. Santa Barbara County, Calif., Fire Department rescue workers had been trying to pry Kelli Lynne Groves and her children out the car when the Navy Seabees were driving by with their equipment. "They all got out and wanted to know if they could help maybe with traffic or something else," California Highway Patrol Officer Danny Maher said. "They had a large forklift with them. ... It was actually just good luck on our part." A mother and her two children were in their car when it was clipped Thursday from behind by a big-rig gravel truck and left dangling over the side of an overpass on the 101 Freeway south of Buellton, Calif.

Overturned School Bus Crash with students from Roosevelt HS In Boyle Heights

The California Highway Patrol says a car ran a red light, struck and killed a pedestrian, then broadsided a school bus, injuring dozens of students east of downtown Los Angeles. Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Steve Ruda says one student was seriously injured and 18 others taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries in the Monday afternoon crash. He says 25 students on the bus were not injured and were taken to the Hollenbeck police station to be reunited with family members. CHP Officer Charmaine Fajardo tells KCAL-TV that by standers detained two people after the crash and turned them over to CHP officers when they arrived at the scene. Los Angeles Unified School District spokesman Robert Alaniz tells KCAL-TV the students on the bus were from Roosevelt High School. Authorities said they are investigating whether drunk driving might have been involved in the accident that killed one person and injured dozens of students aboard a school bus in Boyle Heights on Monday. Witnesses told The Times that a black BMW ran a red light and hit the bus and that the car's driver and a passenger jumped out of the BMW and ran away. Wild police chase ends in gunfire

KTRK-TV -- Houston -- June 9, 2009 -- 7:26 AM CDT // Pasadena, Texas -- An auto theft suspect is in the hospital after being shot by a police officer he's accused of trying to run over. This all started early this morning at an apartment complex in the 900 block of Houston in Pasadena. Police noticed a stolen truck at the complex. The person in the truck took off as soon as he realized he was spotted by police. There was a lot of road construction in that area of Pasadena. A few blocks away from where the case began, the suspect hit a construction road sign, overcorrected, took out a light pole and crashed on Denham. The driver then put the vehicle in reverse and allegedly tried to run over one of the officers who had been chasing him. After getting out of the way, the officer pulled out his revolver and fired three shots, each one hitting the suspect inside the vehicle.

An MTA construction truck struck an overhead road sign on the Queens-bound plaza of the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge at 1:10 pm on Friday, causing the steel sign structure to come crashing down on all six lanes and injuring two people who were on the truck, according to MTA Bridges and Tunnels The boom truck was driven by Alpha Painting and Construction Company, a contractor for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority hired to paint the bridges Queens and Bronx towers, according to Judie Glave, a spokeswoman for the authority. Two men sustained minor injuries, one had a head injury and another had a fracture leg, and both were taken to New York Queens Hospital. George Attwal, a witness who said he was driving his Volkswagen Passat two cars behind the truck, described it as a pickup truck, with a cranelike operator in its bed, perhaps used like a cherry-picker to fix things, he said. I guess he forgot to lower it and it hit the roadway sign, Mr. Attwal, 23, of Flushing, Queens, said in a telephone interview. It collapsed right in front of us and two people fell off. They were standing in the back of the pickup. On person fell off and he rolled onto the road itself. Mr. Attwal, who was returning from a business call in New Jersey and headed to Long Island, said the accident all happened within two seconds. Flame Throwers: Video of crash victim saved from burning car in Utah

A Utah motorcyclist who was pinned under a burning car, expressed his gratitude on Tuesday for the help of strangers who lifted up the the 4000 pound (1.8 tonne) vehicle to rescue him, in an act of bravery captured on amateur video. Authorities said 21-year-old Brandon Wright was riding his motorcycle on Monday near the Utah State University campus in Logan when he collided with a black BMW that was pulling out of a parking lot. Tyre and skid marks on the highway indicate that Wright laid the bike down and slid along the road before colliding with the car. The bike hit the car's hood and bounced to the ground, while Wright, who was not a wearing helmet, slid under the car and then both vehicles burst into flames, police said. Wright was pinned to the ground as the flames began to engulf the car. The video shows a crowd of about 10 men and women gathering around the burning car and motorcycle as flames shoot into the air. Quickly the group places their hands on the car and starts to rock it until it tilts up on its side.Once the car is on two wheels, a construction worker can be seen dragging a spread-eagled Wright from under the car. PENSACOLA, Florida - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has identified the teenager who was run over by a Pensacola police officer. According to investigators, Officer Jerald Ard spotted 17-year-old Victor Steen at a construction site Saturday. When he tried to question the teenager, police say Steen took off on his bicycle. Ard flashed his lights, but Steen didn't pull over. Investigators say Ard then shot a stun gun out his window, but missed Steen. Steen then turned into a parking lot, crashed his bicycle and was run over by Ard's car. Steen was pronounced dead at the scene. Ard has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the FDLE investigation.

Croswell-Lexington High School and Middle School were under construction at the time, and a water main broke shutting off the water in the school. Because of this they let us out of school early. My best friend Jonah Ainsworth's little sister Korylette Kucken was walking to a friends house after school that lived 4 miles out of Croswell (Lexington). Korylette was on the phone with the same friend when she didn't pay attention while crossing a road and was hit by a car. The driver of that car was not drunk or anything else, she tried to stop (so don't even go there). The driver of that car was my brother's best friend's mother. She was unable to stop and hit Korylette. Before the ambulence was called to save her, it was already too late. Korylette was already pronounced dead. Jonah, at the time was just walking around Croswell with one of his buds when he got the call from his dad saying Korylette was hit by a car and killed. Heavy lifts at Deer Creek Station construction site

In the world of heavy lifts, nothing moves too quickly. Take this steam drum, for example. It's gonna be on its way to the Deer Creek Station. Soon. It's lifted off its train car. And then set down on another trailer. This Goldhofer trailer has 144 tires and a capacity to carry far more weight than you'll find in this steam drum. Just ask Darrell Morris. (Darrell Morris): "It is not the biggest one. The generators and turbines are bigger. We actually have some of the components on inside of the boiler itself is bigger than this drum also." Morris and his crew with Boldt Construction have done more than a dozen big lifts for the Deer Creek Station so far. (Darrell Morris): "We've put a lot of rigging time, rigging studies into all these lifts. Yeah, we're ready, and we're ready to hit the air with it." Once the Goldhofer rolls away with the steam drum, Boldt stays behind in Aurora, South Dakota, to get ready for the next lift. The steam drum travels 16 road miles to the Deer Creek Station site. It's going to be set down in the south end of the plant site. (Matt Ehrman): "We actually have several lay down yards. We have one at the north entrance to the plant, and we've got another one at the south end of the plant. Death of teen exposes risks of expanded Taser usage (August 1, 2010) Victor Steen was the fourth person who died in Florida in 2009 in a Taser incident. He was fleeing on bicycle from an officer when he fell from his bicycle; the officer's cruiser then ran over him. Late one night in October, a 17-year-old on a bike was chased by a police officer in a cruiser. When the boy refused to stop, the officer aimed his Taser out the driver's window and fired. The boy fell off the bike and the cruiser ran over him, killing him. Officer Jerald Ard would later say that he tried to stop Victor because he had seen him at a construction site and thought he may have stolen something. But witness Victor Stallworth said he saw Victor ride his bicycle past the construction site without stopping. Months later, Ard gave investigators a different reason for stopping Victor: He didn't have a light on his bike — only two reflectors.
