CANYON OF THE ANCIENT ONES
Horseshoe Canyon (a remote western section of Canyonlands National Park, Utah) contains some of the most significant rock art found in North America. The sheer sandstone walls and cottonwood trees shade the canyon floor as you hike back into pre-history to view the various magnificent rock art locations. The Great Gallery is the most spectacular of the Horseshoe Canyon pictographs (painted figures) and petroglyphs (figures etched in rock by a sharp stone) found in the Canyonland region. The large life-sized ghostly figures and supernatural images eerily gaze down over the ancient water-carved canyons and the intrepid travelers who come to view them. Many of the figures are armless and some, alien-like in appearance. Known to us as the Barrier Canyon style of painting, it is believed to date to the Late Archaic period, from 2000 BC to AD 500. During later periods, the Anasazi (ancestral Puebloan cultures) left their own style of rock art in the canyon as well. If you look carefully, you will find evidence of fossilized impressions of the once great beasts that roamed the area 145 million years in the past. During the late Jurassic period, the large carnivorous three-toed Allosaurus had walked and hunted near the rim of the canyon. Now only the snakes, lizards, and raptors stand guard over this ancient landscape. Horseshoe Canyon is a canyon alive with the secrets and the spirits of the ancient ones.

Grand Canyon Flyover
Aerial Filmworks is working with the Grand Canyon National Park to film the national park using the Cineflex V14HD. This amazing gyro-stabilized aerial system uses an integrated Sony CineAlta HDC1500 camera. The lens is a 42x 9.7mm Fujinon. All footage was recorded 1080/23.98p dual-link 4:4:4 to a Sony SRW1 deck on HDCAM SR tape stock. The original HDCAM SR source tapes were digitized using an AJA Kona3 card to a MacPro 8 core with 17Gb RAM, and edited with Final Cut Pro at our inhouse edit suite. The Cineflex V14HD was mounted on the nose of a Bell 206B3 Jet Ranger helicopter. We worked closely with the national park to make sure all permissions and permits were in place. Daily updates to local air traffic control and the tour helicopter companies were sent on flight days. Our pilot was specifically approved for the operation by the FAA and Department of Interior. We mapped reference points to the GPS and input sensitive condor nesting areas that we needed to avoid. Natural resource and wildlife managers reviewed our flight plans. The Aerial Filmworks team believes in doing our part to maintain a carbon neutral planet. Through a partnership with TerraPass, we invest in carbon offsets for every hour of flight time that our Cineflex equipment is on a helicopter.

The Grand Canyon: How It Formed
Erosive forces continue to shape the Grand Canyon today, millions of years after it began to form. Normal channel erosion alone, however, cannot explain the many kilometers that separate its rims. The strongest explanation holds that the major factor in the widening of the canyon has been activity from tributary drainage systems -- the side streams, rivulets, and gullies outside the main river channel. The greatest erosive force in these tributaries is the fast-moving landslide called a debris flow.

The Grand Canyon is such an icon of the Earth's geological history, of slow and steady uplift, erosion, submergence and deposition, that the creationist crowd thought it essential to tackle it head on. So they have come up with an explanation as to how it might have got there in a world created only 6000 years ago. Their attempts to squeeze this majestic testament to natural processes into bronze age mythology are not just clumsy, they're the stuff good comedy is made of. I regret that I have been unable to answer messages for the past few weeks; a situation that will continue until after the Golden Crocoduck has been awarded in October. GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK Arizona
The Grand Canyon National Park is the most beautiful and well-known nature reserve in the USA Its 5000 square kilometres covers more than 4 different climatic zones and rises to 2200 metres above sea level. The Grand Canyon is also Indian Territory, the Navajo, Hopi and Havasuapi Indians still inhabit this region. Neatly piled one above the other, the Grand Canyon features 12 geological layers of various time periods. Its time-span ranges from the fossil rich 250 million year old limestone of the Kaibab Plateau to the almost 2 million year old Vishu slate at the bottom of the ravine. The Colorado River created this natural masterpiece in less than 10 million years, with severe heat and extreme cold eroding the rock, followed by rainfall that drove it down into a mighty river. Up to 1600 metres deep and averaging 16 kilometres wide, the incredible dimensions of this huge abyss are difficult to comprehend, the descent into the canyon being like a journey into the Earth's distant past. The rays of the sun make the geological strata appear brown from above and green and blue from below. The cream-colored strata in the upper parts of the valley walls contain fossils of sponges, corals, snails and crustaceans. The beige-colored sandstone contains fish skeletons and in the purple limestone, there are the impressions of water lilies and primitive crustaceans, with green slate revealing traces of mussels and worms. At the bottom of the canyon, there are no further signs of life ...
Yves 'Jetman' Rossy Flies Through The Grand Canyon
Flying his jet-propelled wing attached to his back, and steering only by moving his body, Yves 'Jetman' Rossy launched from a helicopter 8000 feet up into the breathtaking blue of the Grand Canyon sky. Skimming the rockscape at speeds of up to 190 mph, Jetman sustained his flight for more than eight minutes, 200 feet above the rim of Grand Canyon West. He ended the flawless precision flight by deploying his parachute and gracefully descending to the canyon floor. "My first flight in the US is sure to be one of the most memorable experiences in my life, not only for the sheer beauty of the Grand Canyon but the honor to fly in sacred Native American lands," Rossy stated. "Thank you Mother Nature and the Hualapai Tribe for making my lifelong dreams come true." An earlier flight scheduled for Friday, May 6 was cancelled when final FAA certification was held up due to difficulty in classifying Mr. Rossy's one-of-a-kind jet-powered wing. Yves Rossy has already won global acclaim for his successful jet-powered flights cross Lake Geneva and the English Channel. But this was the first time he had ever achieved his dream of flying in the purest sense in the US
