Maria Callas (Μαρία Κάλλας): Madama Butterfly - Puccini

Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) Un Bel Di Vedremo Madama Butterfly (Madame Butterfly) is an opera in three acts (originally two acts) by Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The opera was based partly on a short story by John Luther Long, which was turned into a play by David Belasco; it was also based on the novel, Madame Chrysanthème (1887), by Pierre Loti. The opera belongs essentially to the city of Nagasaki, and according to American scholar Arthur Groos was based on events that actually occurred there in the early 1890s. (We appreciate Wikipaedia's contributions in the descriptions here)

Maria Callas

Maria Callas was born in New York City in 1923 to Greek parents. The uniqueness of her angelic voice and her unmatched artistry of interpreting operatic music are the reasons why she was an opera superstar. Ms. Callas passed away in 1977. The soundtrack is "Suicidio!" from "La Gioconda" by Amilcare Ponchielli. PS: check out my other channel "SundroidHD": www.youtube.com or my website: www.shisun.net

Callas - Trovatore 1950

"La grande vociacia" (the big unpretty voice) of Maria Callas (dixit her mentor,T. Serafin) who was singing Isolde, Brünnhilde, Kundry, Fidelio, Turandot and Gioconda, reveals in Mexico 1950 her treasures of agility and line in the rather belcantist Trovatore of Verdi, at a time where coloraturas agilities were rather the prerogative of light sopranos. Dark and incredible flexibility at the end of the duet with the baritone.

Maria Callas - Ah! Crudel! (Parsifal)

Amazing scene from Wagner's Parsifal, act 2. Kundry is an interesting role, written for the mezzo/contralto Marienne Brant who was also able to sing dramatic soprano, and had a vocal range from low G to high D, and was a pupil of the great Pauline Viardot. The role of Kundry requires a strong low register but also a resilient upper register, with a tessitura so widely shifting than in some productions it has been performed by two different singers on stage! The fantastic range of Kundry is low Ab to high B.

Amneris- A Callas masterclass

The very talented mezzo Sheila Nadler was given a masterclass at Juillard by Maria Callas in the role of Amneris in Aida. One Callas remark might be astonishing about staying beautiful in any occasion, even in tragedy, at the end. Because Callas would not care, during her career about just sounding or looking beautiful if the dramatic necessity needed more roughness. But one must remember that Amneris is a royal princess, not Santuzza, not Medea.

Maria Callas as Medea 03

This is a slide show made with photographs of Maria Callas as Cherubini's Medea, one of her greatest roles. The photos are from Alexis Minotis's production, performed in Dallas (1958), London (1959), Epidaurus (1961) and Milan (1961 & 1962), where Jon Vickers was Giasone. The sound-track is from the studio recording made in 1957, with the Chorus and Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, directed by Tullio Serafin. Giasone is sung by Mirto Picchi. The pictures were chosen according to the text sung. If you like it, search for my other videos. This is the first dialogue between Medea and Giasone. In the recitative and in her first aria, Medea appeals to Giasone to remember all that she sacrificed for him in the past. In the ensuing duet (see my next video), Medea will pass from supplication to threat.

Maria Callas at her best, sings "Violetta Aria" La Traviata

Scenes from the 1984 Italian mini-series "The Life of Verdi"? The singing is from the 1953 Santini studio recording? it's Callas singing but she didn't "do" this as a vocal sound track - as she had left us in 1977. It does show how associated she was with the role, that the producers of the series would choose her voice for the Traviata segment rather than a soprano still singing at the time of filming. Thanks Arnold

Madame Butterfly - Maria Callas

Puccini's Opera ''madame butterfly'' by Maria Callas Maria Callas (Greek: Μαρία Κάλλας) (December 2, 1923 September 16, 1977) was an American-born Greek soprano and one of the most renowned opera singers of the twentieth century. She combined an impressive bel canto technique with great dramatic gifts. An extremely versatile singer, her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini, and Rossini; further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, the music dramas of Wagner. Her remarkable musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina. Born in New York City and raised by an overbearing mother, she received her musical education in Greece and established her career in Italy. Forced to deal with the exigencies of wartime poverty and with myopia that left her nearly blind on stage, she endured struggles and scandal over the course of her career. She turned herself from a heavy woman into a svelte and glamorous one after a mid-career weight loss, which might have contributed to her vocal decline and the premature end of her career. The press exulted in publicizing Callas's allegedly temperamental behavior, her supposed rivalry with Renata Tebaldi, and her love affair with Aristotle Onassis. Her dramatic life and personal tragedy have often overshadowed Callas the artist in the popular press. Her artistic achievements, however, were such that Leonard Bernstein called her "The Bible of opera", and ...

Callas teaches bass-baritone Willard White on Fiesco's aria

Another lesson at the Juilliard School, on Fiesco'aria in Simon Boccanegra. Callas inspires young Willard White (before he began his a great carreer) with some more authority, exact diction, urgency in the vibrato and phrasing, and talks about the relative pianissimo on an operatic stage.

Maria Callas - La mamma morta

La mamma morta (They killed my mother) is an aria from the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano. It is sung by the role of Maddalena di Coigny (soprano). . . This video is best viewed at 720p on a full screen. All lyrics are included in Italian and in English. A very brief summary of the plot: The story takes place during the French Revolution. The title of the opera is also the name of the main character, André Chénier, a poet and believer in love and freedom. The story opens at the château de Coigny where Maddalena, a countess, is having a party which Chénier attends. These are the two major roles. The third major role is Gérard, a servant, who secretly loves Maddalena. Gérard later joins Robespierre's Reign of Terror. Eventually, Chénier and Maddalena fall in love. Gérard, who moves up in the ranks, has Chénier (who opposes the reign of terror) arrested but arranges for Maddalena to be spared. Unfortunately for Gérard, Maddalena chooses to die with Chénier rather than live without him. They are both sent to the guillotine. The opera is obviously more complicated than this brief synopsis but this is the gist of it. "La mamma morta" is also sung by Maria Callas in the 1993 movie, "Philadelphia" with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. The scene where Hanks listens to and interprets this aria is phenomenal and contributed to earning him an Oscar for his role in the movie.

Angela Gheorghiu - Homage to Maria Callas

NEW ALBUM AVAILABLE HERE: links.emi.com .... Angela Gheorghiu, the defining diva of the 21st century, releases 'Homage to Maria Callas'. An Homage to Maria Callas featuring stunning new recordings of favourite arias from La Bohème, La Traviata, La Wally, and many more... 'Homage to Maria Callas' is a collection of beloved French and Italian operatic masterpieces performed by Angela Gheorghiu, the defining diva of this century. The programme is inspired by the career and recordings of Maria Callas, the greatest diva of the last century. The arias are shared favourites of both Callas and Gheorghiu, and Angela's new recording demonstrates once again her extraordinary vocal and emotional range. Angela Gheorghiu said recently, "Callas was original in everything she did; she was a phenomenon. In every performance she gave her all. She was the most wonderful painter and you can always hear exactly the right colour in her voice. Just hearing her sound, you understand all the power or fragility of her emotions. That's a rare talent and a great gift." Gheorghiu continued, "EMI was her record label and it's mine too. It feels like a family". Recorded at London's iconic Abbey Road Studios in London and in New York, the repertoire of Gheorghiu's first studio recital in six years (during which time she recorded several complete operas, including a multi-award-winning Madama Butterfly), shows her versatility in lyric, spinto and mezzo roles, with each of which she feels a strong ...
