On the whole, although precociously talented, child entertainers were usually saddled with inferior, childish material that, while perhaps cute at the time, were usually novelty acts that grew tiresome pretty quickly. Some couldn't handle the swift drop in popularity and turned to drink or drugs, while others retired gracefully and concentrated their energies in other directions. One such was that tiny bundle of Detroit dynamite, "Sugar Chile" Robinson. Born Frankie Robinson, the youngest of six children, in Detroit in 1940, "Sugar Chile" began pounding on the family piano as a toddler - he reputedly banged out a recognisable version of Erskine Hawkins' Tuxedo Junction at the age of two - and by 1945 he had been "discovered" by pianist and bandleader Frankie Carle. Within a year he was asked to play at a Whitehouse party for President Harry Truman, had guested with Lionel Hampton's Orchestra and even appeared performing the title song in the 1946 MGM romantic comedy film "No Leave, No Love". It was not until July 1949, however, that he made his first records for the Capitol label, when, in the consummate company of jazz veterans Leonard Bibbs on bass and drummer ...

This version of "Caldonia" wasrecorded at The Harp Hotel, Albrighton, Shropshire, England on Sunday, March 2nd. 2008 by Bob Dwyer's Hot Six during their annual visit. With Bob on trombone, Bill Edmonds on trumpet, John Rayne on clarinet, alto and bass sax, Peter Clancy on bass, Nick Singer on banjo and Hugh Crozier on piano this was part of a superb session which showed the versatility of a truly entertaining band. Hugh Crozier is featured on piano and vocal in this number, very well backed by the rest of the band. "Caldonia" is a jump blues song, first recorded in 1945 by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five. In 1942, Jordan had started on an unparalleled run of success on the Billboard Harlem Hit Parade (forerunner of the R&B chart), which by 1945 had included four number one hits, and eventually made Jordan by far the most successful R&B chart act of the 1940s. "Caldonia" became his fifth number one on what was at that point called the "Race Records" chart. It made the charts in May 1945, reached # 1 in June where it stayed for 7 weeks, and remained on the charts for a total of 26 weeks. It also crossed over to the pop charts, where it peaked at # 6 under the title "Caldonia Boogie". The writing of the song is credited to Jordan's wife of the time, Fleecie Moore. However, in all probability it was actually written by Jordan, who used his wife's name to enable him to work with an additional music publisher. Jordan later said :- "Fleecie Moore's name is on it, but she didn't have anything to do with it. That was my wife at the time, and we put it in her name. She didn't know nothin' about no music at all. Her name is on this song and that song, and she's still getting money."[1] However, by the time of that quote, Jordan and Moore had divorced after a number of arguments in which she had stabbed him with a knife.
