I know this log cabin is small, but it was more of an experiment in remote shelter building for me than anything else. It took about 3 months of weekends to build this log cabin, which was about 100 hours in total. All materials used were found on site or packed in on my back up a small winding foot trail. It took 5 fir trees and a handfull of sapplings plus a bag of screws, a few bags of morter, various concrete blocks and some thick poly for the window and a zinc strip on the roof ridge. The log cabin has had 6 feet of snow last year and the cedar roof held together nicely. This log cabin sits on 4 large rocks, one at each corner of the log cabin and the floor is made of dirt. The wood heater/stove doesn't actually work all that well, but hey it was my first attempt. I think the notching is called a half notch, and it was chosen for it's simplicity since this was my first attempt at this sort of thing. The notches require a hand saw an axe and a few sharp bangs from a mallet to make, they were very simple and quick compared with a saddle notch style, though the downside of this style is that they had to be spiked at each corner to keep them secure. Sorry for the lack of tunes, it's my first vid or should I say slide show.

Trees To Timber Frame Cabin Off-grid Homestead Project Floor Joist
What size lumber mill attachment do I need? How big are your trees? How wide of a board do you want to cut? These are questions we can help you answer. Granberg'sAlaskan Mark III Chainsaw Mill comes in five normally stocked sizes; 24, 30, 36, 48 and 56 inches long and all of them will clamp on any size chain saw bar(except one shorter than 5 inches and some narrow bars). We recommend large displacement saws for more effective ripping. However smaller saws will work but are less efficient and some of the bars on the smaller saws are too narrow to mount the chainsaw mill's clamping brackets, without pinching your chainsaw bar's rails. How much power must my chain saw have? The general rule is, the more power your saw engine has, the faster the cutting speed. Almost any engine that runs, will cut, it just depends on how much time you want to spend milling your lumber. - How do I make first my first cut? Log cabin notching
This is my second video so it doesn't really have any cool tunes but it does have a few bloopers like me dropping stuff and me almost falling off the cabin wall but other than that it's just an instructional video. I thought that this was called a half notch but it's not really so I have no idea what it is. I just use the method because I am used to it and the notching is fairly quick whilst using just an axe a mallet and a hand saw. The log in the example is about 11 inch in diameter and even though it's not shown, both sides of the log are notched on oposite ends. . . . so that equals 4 notches per log. It isn't shown in this video, but I also drove an 8-10 inch spike into each corner after the log was placed just to keep everything where it should be.
Cabin Chaos!
So I went on a 5 day trip with Kyle, my girlfriend, and a few friends. It was to Kyle's dads cabin, in the middle of nowhere. No phone signal, no internet, nothing.
