Making a Feather Stick - Bushcraft Basics

Today we look at making a Feather Stick for fire lighting. Feather sticks help us in numerous ways; if your a little low on tinder making a feather-sticks allows you to turn what would otherwise be larger fuel into a tinder allowing you to start your fire. It's also a handy skill to know if it has been raining a lot and a lot of the dead wood is wet (on the outside) feathersticking allows you to access the dry inner wood and can provide the tinder, kindling & fuel to get your fire started. It is a skill worth practicing and can be enjoyable to do.

Best Bushcraft Knife

Spyderco BushCraft G-10 have replaced last years maple handles. Many users found the wood handles started to crack. Spyderco has since replaced the scales with black G 10 on 2012 model knives. Bushcraft is a tradition as much as a sport. It follows a regime of survival skills derived originally from Bushmen of the southern hemisphere. It's mainstreamed today by UK resident Ray Mears through his televised programs outlining how to thrive and survive with only a knife both skillfully and comfortably in nature. Spyderco's version of a Bushcraft knife results from a three-fold collaboration between Tactical Bushcrafter Chris Claycombe, a Bushcraft website called BushcraftUK.com and Spyderco designers. Knives used in the practice of Bushcraft have specific parameters such as possessing blades between 4-6 inches. Spyderco's is typical of the genre with a 4-inch blade (no handguard) that's fully-tanged. The blade is a Scandinavian or Scandi grind. Scandi edges have a single bevel grind, wide and flat that cuts with strength and is able to withstand twisting and hacking. The blade is made from O-1 tool steel. Bushcrafters generally don't seek the characteristics of stainless over the performance of high-carbon edge retention, and is why traditional Bushcraft knives are produced using tool steel for their blades. O-1's high carbon content holds a long-term edge but also sharpens easily when laying on a new edge. The black G-10 handle is contoured for comfort with a backup lanyard ...

Bushcraft USA 10 X 12 Tarp Test Part 1, Equip 2 Endure

I picked up a 10X12 Tarp from Bushcraft USA, and could not wait to get it out and start doing some tests with it. This shelter is very versatile in regards to all the shelter set-ups you are capable of doing with a tarp this size. The Tarp retails for $140.00, all the secs and details will be presented in the additional parts of this test series. In this first part we will give a point of reference to the size and set the shelter up for a week long test. The first thing I have to say is I was worried about the strength of the tabs, but after my 90 pound German Shepherd ran through a line and snapped the bank-line attached to my tent stake and only popped the cordage, causing know damage to the tabs, my fears was quenched. Looks to be a great product, so tune back in for more tests, and final review. www.bushcraftoutfitters.com

Marbles Outdoors firefighters survival axe - budget shtf / bushcraft gear

Review of my brand new Marbles Outdoors firefighter's survival axe. At $16.99 this is a fantastic piece of survival gear for shtf or bushcraft adventures. Although this is more of a machete than an axe or hawk, it is still nonetheless a very impressive piece of budget gear. I can't wait to put this thing to the test. It appears to be a very good option for wilderness or urban survival or part of your bug out bag. This thing is a knife, machete, axe, hatchet, and tomahawk all rolled into one. This is definite budget utility.

Bushcraft USA 5 X 7 MEST Tarp Test Part 1, Equip 2 Endure

Chance Sanders had an opportunity to make a quick test video in regards to the Bushcraft USA MEST For only $22.00 this is a versatile little tarp that packs a lot of bang for the buck. Ray Mears Bushcraft - Choosing and Using an Axe

This is a short, free excerpt from Ray Mears' website. This is a small example of the bonus features which come along with purchasing the Ray Mears Bushcraft Survival Series 2 DVD. The DVD can be purchased from Ray Mear's website, www.raymears.com , along with many other top-notch instructional videos. Apologies for the bad quality! It can be found in a much higher quality version on Ray Mears' website. Here, Ray shows three axes, all made by Gränsfors Bruks of Sweden. Smallest to largest, he shows the Wildlife Hatchet, the Small Forest Axe, then my personal choice, the Scandinavian Forest Axe. He then shows some techniques on how to use an Axe. I highly recommend all of Ray's DVD's. They all include Ray's thorough wilderness wisdom for numerous types of environments across the world. Many of the videos also include short stories / reenactments of people in real survival scenarios, where Ray points out what they did right, what they did wrong, and what they could have done. Great stuff.

bushcraft gear: minimal scouting kit

please answer the question from the end of the vid! the spring is finally here, the weather is nice, so i decided to scout (on my bike) outside of the city for new camp places. since i didn't want to take my backpack, i decided to go with a minimal kit that is small and light, but still covers all my basic needs. the only (slightly) unpleasant thing was that the water bottle was too small, and, even if i drank a lot before leaving the city, i was thirsty by the time i got back.

Stanley Multi-Use bottle - a new bushcraft favorite

Review of the Stanley Multi-use bottle. Picked one of these up from Wal-mart for $10 after seeing this on MDprepper's channel. This is an excellent item for anyone interested in bushcraft or prepping as it is a heavy duty bombproof bottle and is very versatile in use. The bottle works as a stainless steel cup you can boil water in, a plastic cup for drinking, and a bottle to store your water in as you travel. Amazing piece of budget bushcraft gear.

Bushcraft - Why Testing New Kit & Ideas Is Important

Why we should test all new kit, ideas or theories before using out in the field...

Bushcraft - Field Expedient Fish Stringer

youtu.be Lonnie is the first person I've seen on YT to demonstrate this. I've known about it for along time though. Simple, but effective! Using a branch to hold your fish. Willow or hickory work good because they flex without breaking. A branch with a fork or Y in it is whittled or carved down with a knife to suit your needs. This type of fish keeper is used for everything from Salmon right down to the smallest yellow perch. The longer the better as it will need to be stabbed into the bank. A rock placed over top will prevent the fish from getting away, even with strong waves or current from a river. Bushcraft Mess Kit Option

I'm always going back & fourth between being a "gear junkie" & a minimalist when it comes to how I spend time outside. Well this mess kit has me leaning more on the minimalist side again. I've used the GSI kettle on group camp outs but never as part of my backpacking system. I wanted to look at it through more of a bushcraft lens & leave the stove at home. Cook bacon over the open flame & have cowboy coffee with a packet or two of splenda : ) I know there are many ways to go about this this. Some guys will ditch the kettle & use a coffee can with a hanger as the bail. Find what works for you & have fun with it I say. As always thanks for watching & take care

Obviously prices/availability may differ in your part of the world, but hopefully this will give you a good idea of what to look for.
