Seattle Bus Tunnel
Buses operating in dedicated transit tunnels are very rare. One city where this is done is Seattle, Washington State, USA. Originally opening in September 1990, and wholly located within the city's 'free travel' zone the 1 & 1/3rd mile (2.1km) tunnels were originally served by a fleet of Italian Breda duobuses, with some services providing a direct link to the city's airport. It is in this guise that this film was made. The bus subway features 5 stations which opened on Mondays - Saturdays only. At the time of construction rail tracks were also installed for a future light rail service. Unfortunately despite this commendable forward thinking it was subsequently decided that part of the light rail line will follow a different alignment than the existing tunnels, so on 24th September 2005 the bus subway was closed for two year period of rebuilding. Most of the duobuses were actually withdrawn well in advance of the closure (with many being converted to pure trolleybuses for use on surface routes) and - amazingly - replaced with diseasal powered buses. (diseasal = disease diesel) In April 2005 local users were reporting on Internet discussion groups that the tunnels were often somewhat smelly from (what thinking people know to be) the poisonous diesel engine exhaust fumes. A Vietnamese traffic police officer went on a wild ride in Hanoi, clinging to the windshield wipers of a moving bus for nearly a kilometre after a rogue driver tried to avoid a ticket. Traffic lieutenant Nguyen Manh Phan pulled over Phung Hong Phuong, 37, in Hanoi on Monday for driving on the wrong side of the road, VN Express reported. Phuong refused to produce his papers and rushed back to the bus, prompting the officer to jump onto the front in an attempt to stop him. Video shot by one of Phan's fellow police officers shows the officer trying to get his footing and dangling precariously from the moving bus as oncoming traffic whizzes past. At one point the bus was travelling at 50 kmph (31mph). Phan could be heard shouting: "Call the police!" The driver, who was released in 2010 after serving nearly four years in prison for a fatal traffic accident, eventually pulled over after being chased by police and villagers. Oct 7, 2009 10am, Chinatown San Francisco. This fight occurred on the Muni Stockton route (the 9 i think) just before the stockton tunnel. As you can see, a simple argument about seat-hogging quickly turned into a full blown brawl. It's pretty clear who threw the first punch, you can see the bus' serial number, and the exact time in the video. By the way, this is the same bus where I was attacked 3 weeks ago, so I thought documenting the event was the most important thing I could do. This fight was NOT reported by the driver OR by the MUNI person who happened to be at the final stop (Stockton and Sutter). I'll be walking to work for a while. The EBSF offers easier boarding, shorter journey time and a more comfortable trip. Within the framework of European Bus System of the Future (EBSF) programme, researchers, companies and public authorities are working together to create new solutions for tomorrow's bus-based public transport. One of the sub-projects is taking place in Göteborg in the form of a cooperative venture between Volvo Buses, Chalmers University of Technology, public transport authority Västtrafik and transport operator Veolia. The aim is to develop and test a bus with properties designed to attract more passengers while at the same time offering the conditions needed for cost-efficient operation. The song title represents a combination of two institutions in Smith's Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, neighborhood: the double Dutch game of jump rope played by neighborhood kids, and the SEPTA bus system that was a backbone of the local transportation network (and for which Smith had unsuccessfully applied for a bus driving position; the Transpass referred to in the song is an actual SEPTA pass). Smith and co-writer Bill Bloom persuaded contacts at WMOT Records to finance the song, and it was recorded in the summer of 1981, engineered by Gene Leone. The song rocketed to popularity in a matter of weeks. On the US Billboard R&B chart, it held the number one spot for eight weeks.
