A bus crashed through the side of a bridge while crossing a river in central Vietnam, leaving 34 people dead and at least 20 injured, authorities said Friday. The vehicle was carrying 60 passengers from Dak Lak province to Ho Chi Minh City when the accident took place at 10 pm Thursday (1500 GMT Thursday), said Dinh Van Khiet, chairman of the provincial People's Committee. "We have initially verified 20 seriously injured, but people were sent to different hospitals during the night so we have not finished counting them," said Doan Quoc Thu, the deputy director of Dak Lalk province, who was part of the rescue team. Mr. Khiet said local authorities would give 300 dollars each to the families of the dead and 170 dollars each to the families of the injured.

The accident happened on Interstate 20 while the buses were taking students from Burke County near the South Carolina state line to a Six Flags amusement park outside of Atlanta, said Johnny Jenkins, chairman of the Burke County Board of Education. Traffic on the highway had slowed approaching Covington because of a closed lane, said Gordy Wright, a spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol, which is investigating the accident. As the buses reduced speed, one bus was struck from behind by another school bus, setting off a chain collision that damaged six buses and a car. The accident temporarily shut down westbound traffic on the major highway. Rescue crews had to cut a bus driver, Angela Benjamin Jones, 44, from the wreckage, said Amy Nunnally, a spokeswoman for the Burke County school system. The driver, who was conscious and able to communicate with emergency workers, was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and listed in stable condition. Two other people suffered injuries, police said. About 50 others were examined at regional hospitals for possible injuries after the wreck. Aside from the bus driver, school officials said none of the injuries appeared serious. "Just a few bruises, scrapes," Nunnally said. "Nothing bad happened to any of our children." A bus has crashed into a wall of an expressway in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo, killing seven people. Local police say the deaths from cardiopulmonary arrest were confirmed by doctors at the scene. The accident took place shortly before 5 AM on Sunday near a junction on the Kan-etsu expressway in Fujioka City, Gunma Prefecture. Local fire and emergency authorities say nine people were seriously wounded and 30 were slightly injured. Pictures taken from an NHK helicopter show that the front part of the bus is badly damaged, and much of the vehicle is sticking into mid-air off the expressway. The head of the company that operates the bus said the vehicle left Kanazawa City in central Japan on Saturday night, and was heading for Tokyo Disneyland.
