Road to Mandalay - Burma

Suu Kyi exhausted a week before elections? To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Having long been closed off to the outside world, Burma is now lifting the curtain and making staggering democratic reforms. But will the regime really pass power to its people in the upcoming elections? For years Burma has been ruled by a corrupt military junta that brutally suppressed all opposition, used forced labour and imprisoned thousands for their political views. But recently - and suddenly - things have changed. After elections that most observers regarded as a sham, the new government released Aung San Suu Kyi, suspended a hugely unpopular dam project with China, freed thousands of prisoners and signed peace pacts with a number of warring ethnic groups. Even Hillary Clinton dropped in for a visit. Ko Ko Hlaing, the President's Chief Advisor, admits the sins of the past and insists that Burma is now heading in a new direction. "We need credibility and we need legitimacy and we need to make trust between the people and the government". It's still early days for the reform process and whether the regime actually passes power to the people will be the ultimate test. For tourism at least, the changes have already proved to be a huge draw. "I wanted to be here right now to spend my tourism dollars in those changes and I also wanted to you know really see for myself what's going on". The Lady on the Lake - Burma

Suu Kyi makes her first political trip since her release To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com After months of negotiation, this report secured an exclusive and rare interview with Burma's Suu Kyi. A powerhouse of ideas, she explains her vision for Burma and her relationship with the government. In her crumbling, rambling old home by the lake Aung San Suu Kyi remains an inspiration for the people of Burma. From here she has spent the majority of the last 20 years driving the freedom movement. Strangely, she finds house arrest no impediment: "no, because after all, I can get out my message". As she explains her vision for change she warns about impatience, but also says change may come more quickly than many might expect. "Political change can come very unexpectedly, sometimes overnight when you least expect it." Recently, she has been granted more freedom and has been using this to re-connect with the people. While she remains closely watched and her words remain carefully chosen, her mantra throughout is that, "democracy is something for which everybody can work in their own way." It is a message that the people seem to be taking to heart. Like Zayar Thaw, who writes anti-government raps, thousands have been jailed for speaking out against the brutal regime. However, revolution does not appear to be imminent and Suu Kyi is not looking for open confrontation with the regime, despite her continuing support for the ...

Voting in the Military - Burma - November 2010

As all eyes are on Burma's elections and the international media struggle to gain access, hidden cameras in this report offer a ground level look inside the junta. Cho Cho Nyein has spent seven years in prison for her political work, yet she is confident: "I do believe one can use this election to change the system". As the election approaches, the information war is intensifying. In a dramatic new step, Amnesty International is actively intervening by smuggling in radios. Handing them over to armed KNLA members to distribute, its a compromising position for the charity. Monks involved in the Saffron Revolution are also still active: "We do whatever we can, sticking up posters and organising", and yet intelligence forces recently imprisoned a senior monk for 15 years for owning a laptop. With Aung San Suu Kyi and over 2100 other political prisoners still incarcerated, can Burma's people really escape from "living like scared frogs under a log"? Evan Williams

CIA Archives: Buddhism in Burma - History, Politics and Culture

thefilmarchive.org Buddhism in Burma (also known as Myanmar) is predominantly of the Theravada tradition, practised by 89% of the country's population It is the most religious Buddhist country in terms of the proportion of monks in the population and proportion of income spent on religion. Adherents are most likely found among the dominant ethnic Bamar (or Burmans), Shan, Rakhine (Arakanese), Mon, Karen, and Chinese who are well integrated into Burmese society. Monks, collectively known as the Sangha, are venerated members of Burmese society. Among many ethnic groups in Myanmar, including the Bamar and Shan, Theravada Buddhism is practiced in conjunction with nat worship, which involves the placation of spirits who can intercede in worldly affairs. With regard to "salvation" in the Buddhist sense, there are three primary paths in Burmese Buddhism: merit-making, vipassana (insight meditation), and the weizza path (an esoteric form of Buddhism that involves the occult). Merit-making is the most common path undertaken by Burmese Buddhists. This path involves the observance of the Five Precepts and accumulation of good merit through charity and good deeds (dana) in order to obtain a favorable rebirth. The vipassana path, which has gained ground since the early 1900s, is a form of insight meditation believed to lead to enlightenment. The third and least common route, the weizza path, is an esoteric system of occult practices (such as recitation of spells, samatha meditation ...
