Yellowstone National Park's Wildlife: Bison (Buffalo)
The American bison (Bison bison), also commonly known as the American buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds - millions. Their range once roughly comprised a triangle between the Great Bear Lake in Canada's far northwest, south to the Mexican states of Durango and Nuevo León, and east along the western boundary of the Appalachian Mountains. Bison were hunted almost to extinction in the late 19th century primarily by market hunters and were reduced to a few hundred by the mid-1880s. They were hunted for their skins, with the rest of the animal left behind to decay on the ground. The US federal government promoted bison hunting for various reasons, to allow ranchers to range their cattle without competition from other bovines, and primarily to weaken the North American Indian population by removing their main food source and to pressure them onto the reservations. Without the bison, native people of the plains were forced either to leave the land or starve to death. For a decade from 1873 on, there were several hundred, perhaps over a thousand, such commercial hide/market hunting outfits harvesting bison at any one time, vastly exceeding the take by American Indians or individual meat hunters. Rare White Buffalo Slain And Skinned
The Hunt County Sheriff's Department is among several agencies investigating the gruesome death of a rare white buffalo, born nearly a year ago on a ranch near Greenville. Lakota Buffalo Ranch owner Arby Little Soldier said he and his wife returned from out of town to find the calf, considered sacred by some in the Native American community, killed and skinned. The next day its mother was also found dead. The non-albino white buffalo was named Lightning Medicine Cloud in a special ceremony last summer. The chance of a white buffalo birth is said to be 1 in 10 million. "My people -- my brothers, my sisters -- are hurt for what has happened here at this ranch," Little Soldier said. "You don't think things like this are going to happen to such a sacred animal, a sacred family." Sheriff Randy Meeks said he was notified of the crime by Texas Parks and Wildlife. His office is investigating with the help of the Department of Homeland Security and the National Indian Council. He wouldn't reveal details surrounding the investigation, saying he is ever mindful of the significance of rituals and order in the tribe. "Everything we did, we made a request and made sure it was fine with them out of respect for the tribal council," Meeks said. Little Soldier said the animal was more than just a symbol of hope, one who's legend will live strong at the Lakota ranch. "He was the hope of all nations," he said. Beat the eggs well. Combine the flour, cornmeal, and chips in a large bowl. Heat the oil to 350 F. Dredge the chicken in the dry mix, then the egg, then the dry mix again and set aside on a plate until all are coated. Fry 3-4 minutes on each side until golden and crispy. Check that they are cooked through by cutting one in half. Drain on a metal rack while you get the sauce ready. In a large bowl, mix the melted butter and Frank's. Toss the hot chicken pieces in the sauce until coated. Serve at once with celery stalks and blue cheese dressing.

BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - Police have released surveillance video of a car hitting a person at Grant and Letchworth in Buffalo then taking off. The graphic video gives a clear and disturbing picture of what happened early last Thursday morning around 3 am when a car swerved into a group of people. The group had begun running to try and avoid the car, but they weren't fast enough, and one person goes flying over the hood as the car hits the group. The car fled the scene, but police say it didn't take long to track down the driver. Authorities say quick actions by the public and witnesses led them to 19-year-old Tornubari Gbaraba of Buffalo.
